This tool is not a class-approved rudder-force calculation, steering-gear scantling, hydraulic transient analysis, fatigue assessment, relief-valve setting, electrical protection study, SOLAS survey, steering trial, single-failure analysis or OEM guarantee. Hull wake, propeller race, rudder type, cavitation, astern conditions and actuator geometry can materially change actual steering loads.
Reference basis:
SOLAS II-1/29 screens the main steering gear from 35° on one side to 30° on the other in not more than 28 s under the specified deepest-draught / maximum-service-speed condition. Auxiliary steering is screened from 15° to 15° in not more than 60 s at half maximum ahead service speed or 7 knots, whichever is greater. A rudder-stock diameter over 230 mm in way of the tiller triggers alternative steering power, automatically available within 45 s, with at least 30 min endurance at 10,000 GT and above and 10 min below 10,000 GT. Tankers, chemical tankers and gas carriers at 10,000 GT and above, and other ships at 70,000 GT and above, have additional multiple-identical-power-unit provisions.
