Ship Universe Maritime Tool

Wind-Assisted Propulsion ROI & Payback Calculator

Estimate wind-assisted propulsion fuel savings, payback, NPV and ROI for rotor sails, rigid sails, suction wings, kites and other WAPS technologies. Model route-weighted wind performance, auxiliary power, bunker price, carbon value, retrofit CAPEX, annual OPEX and optional FuelEU wind-reward reference values.

Route-Weighted Savings
Separate vendor wind performance from route wind exposure and system availability
Commercial Return
Fuel, carbon and other value less project CAPEX, OPEX and opportunity cost
FuelEU Reference
Optional screening of the PWind / PProp wind reward thresholds

WAPS Technology & Operating Profile

Route-weighted savings are calculated from baseline propulsion fuel, favorable-wind saving, route wind exposure and system availability. Auxiliary electrical demand is converted back to fuel and deducted.

Wind Propulsion ROI Results

Simple WAPS financial screen

Enter project data
Enter fuel consumption, expected wind-assisted fuel savings, bunker price and project cost to calculate WAPS payback, NPV and ROI.
Planning estimate only. Wind-assisted propulsion performance is highly route-, weather-, vessel- and technology-dependent. Results should be validated with route-specific wind data, vendor or independent performance modeling, vessel integration studies and measured operating data where available. The FuelEU reference display uses the PWind / PProp thresholds in Regulation (EU) 2023/1805 Annex I as a screening convention. PWind itself must be determined using the applicable IMO methodology and verified for compliance purposes. Do not use this calculator as an official FuelEU, EEXI, EEDI, CII, EU ETS or class calculation.
