Marine Exhaust Back Pressure, Silencer & Exhaust Piping Tool

Screen a marine engine exhaust line from turbocharger outlet to funnel. Simple mode keeps the entry burden low and estimates pipe friction, silencer/equipment loss, hot-stack draft, engine back-pressure margin and a pressure-based minimum pipe diameter. Advanced adds operating points, segment-by-segment piping, exhaust-treatment components, fouling factors, acoustic insertion-loss references and load/fouling sensitivity.

Eight inputs. The engine-maker limit remains the controlling value. The tool does not impose a universal marine exhaust back-pressure or velocity limit. Enter the allowable turbocharger-outlet back pressure from the applicable engine project guide / maker data.

Exhaust Flow & Pipe

kg/s at the operating point.
°C.
mm.
m, including bends/fittings converted to equivalent length.

Installed Equipment & Limit

mbar at this operating point.
mbar total for SCR, economizer, scrubber, damper, spark arrester, etc.
m from turbo outlet to discharge. Positive rise provides hot-stack draft credit.
mbar. Replace sample value with the engine-maker/project limit.

Advanced Design Basis

mbar absolute.
J/kg·K planning approximation.
Used for Mach screening.
% of the entered OEM limit to preserve as design margin.
m/s. User-entered reference, not a universal rule.
dB manufacturer-rated insertion loss target. Not a final vessel noise prediction.

Exhaust Pipe Segment Register

Segments are evaluated in sequence. Enter local K for bends, transitions, dampers or other minor losses not already represented as standalone components. Positive elevation rise generates a hot-stack draft credit.

Silencer & Exhaust Component Register

Use maker/project pressure-drop data whenever available. Condition factor lets you model fouling or off-design resistance. Acoustic insertion loss is tracked separately and is not converted into pressure drop.

Engine Operating Point Register

Back-pressure limits are operating-point and engine specific. Enter the relevant maker value for every point rather than assuming the sample 50 mbar applies universally.

Installation / Measurement Checks

Engineering boundary: the tool is a low-pressure exhaust-system planning and diagnostic model, not CFD or an engine-maker approval. Exhaust gas properties are approximated with an ideal-gas / air-viscosity model. OEM back-pressure limits, equipment pressure-drop curves, structural support, thermal expansion, noise guarantees, emissions-equipment approval and final sea-trial measurement remain controlling.
