ShipUniverse.com (“Ship Universe,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) respects the privacy of our visitors and users. This Privacy Policy explains the types of information we may collect when you visit ShipUniverse.com, use our maritime calculators and decision tools, contact us, subscribe to communications, or otherwise interact with the site.

1. Information You Provide to Us

Some areas of ShipUniverse.com allow you to voluntarily provide information to us.

Depending on the service you use, this may include your name, email address, company name, website, message, inquiry details, newsletter subscription information, or other information you choose to submit.

We use this information for the purpose for which it was provided, such as responding to an inquiry, providing requested information, managing a subscription, discussing advertising or commercial services, or supporting your use of ShipUniverse.com.

2. Maritime Calculator and Tool Data

ShipUniverse provides maritime calculators, engineering tools, commercial models, planning tools, and other interactive decision-support tools.

When you intentionally perform a calculation, ShipUniverse may store information used in and produced by that calculation.

Calculation data may include:

  • numerical and categorical values entered into a tool;
  • vessel type, size, age, machinery characteristics, operating parameters, fuel type, costs, prices, distances, capacities, rates, loads, dimensions, and similar maritime or engineering variables;
  • assumptions selected or entered for the calculation;
  • calculated outputs and results;
  • units of measurement;
  • whether the tool was used in Simple or Advanced mode;
  • whether figures were identified as a scenario, budget, planned value, or actual value;
  • the tool used and its software version; and
  • related technical information needed to understand and reproduce the calculation.

The maritime tools are not designed to request or collect directly identifying personal information as part of a calculation. Calculation payloads are designed to exclude information such as names, email addresses, telephone numbers, company contact information, vessel names, IMO numbers, MMSI numbers, account identifiers, and similar identifiers unless a future service specifically requires such information and the relevant privacy disclosures are updated.

Users should not enter personal information, confidential information, trade secrets, or information that identifies a specific person, company, vessel, or project into a calculator field unless the tool specifically requests it.

3. How Calculation Data Is Collected

ShipUniverse does not record every keystroke or every change made to a calculator.

A calculation record is generally created when a user intentionally completes a meaningful calculation, such as by selecting the Calculate button.

The calculation data is transmitted asynchronously so that failure of the data-collection system does not prevent the calculator itself from operating.

The Ship Universe Tool Data system is designed not to store the visitor’s raw IP address or browser user-agent string as part of the stored calculation record.

The system may use a pseudonymous browser or client identifier for purposes such as rate limiting, duplicate detection, security, abuse prevention, and data quality. Where such an identifier is used, it is transformed using a server-side cryptographic hash before being stored with calculation records.

This calculation-data system is separate from other website infrastructure, hosting, security, analytics, or logging systems that may process technical information such as an IP address, browser type, device information, referring page, or pages visited.

4. How We Use Maritime Tool Data

We may use calculation data to:

  • operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and improve ShipUniverse tools;
  • identify calculation errors or unusual results;
  • understand which tools, modes, and features are useful to visitors;
  • improve formulas, assumptions, interfaces, defaults, and result presentation;
  • study maritime operating, engineering, commercial, and technical patterns;
  • develop new calculators, tools, datasets, research, reports, and services;
  • improve data quality and detect duplicate, automated, abusive, or invalid submissions;
  • develop aggregated maritime statistics and benchmarks; and
  • support future Ship Universe products and services.

We may create aggregated or de-identified statistics from calculation data. Aggregated or de-identified information may be used in Ship Universe research, industry reports, benchmarking products, commercial services, datasets, or APIs.

ShipUniverse does not sell individual calculator submissions as records tied to an identifiable individual.

5. Benchmark Data

ShipUniverse’s calculation-data system is designed to keep raw calculation records separate from data specifically selected for maritime benchmarking.

Where ShipUniverse offers a benchmark-participation feature, selected values may be converted into benchmark observations using broad categories such as vessel type, size band, age band, fuel type, or region.

Benchmark records are designed to exclude direct identifiers and the pseudonymous browser identifier used with raw calculation records.

Where explicit benchmark participation or consent is required by the applicable ShipUniverse tool or service, benchmark data will only be stored or used in accordance with that process.

6. Automatically Collected Website Information

Like most websites, ShipUniverse.com and the services used to operate it may automatically process certain technical information.

This may include an IP address, browser type, device type, operating system, referring website, pages visited, approximate location derived from an IP address, timestamps, and similar technical information.

This information may be used for website operation, security, fraud and abuse prevention, traffic measurement, performance monitoring, analytics, and improvement of the site.

Cookies, local storage, or similar browser technologies may also be used where necessary to operate website features, remember preferences, measure site usage, or support security and functionality.

7. Sharing and Disclosure

We may disclose information to service providers that assist us in operating ShipUniverse.com, including website hosting, infrastructure, security, analytics, email, database, and other technical service providers.

We may also disclose information when reasonably necessary to comply with applicable law, respond to lawful legal process, protect ShipUniverse or its users, investigate abuse or security incidents, or in connection with a merger, acquisition, restructuring, financing, or transfer of all or part of the business.

Aggregated or de-identified maritime information may be published, licensed, shared, or incorporated into research, benchmarks, reports, datasets, APIs, or other products and services.

8. Data Retention

Raw Ship Universe Tool Data calculation records may be retained for up to four years, unless they are deleted sooner or a different retention period is required for operational, security, legal, or technical reasons.

Aggregated or de-identified statistics may be retained for longer because they are used to study historical maritime trends and improve ShipUniverse tools and services.

Information submitted through contact forms, subscriptions, business inquiries, or other services may be retained for as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was provided and to meet applicable legal or business requirements.

9. Data Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures intended to protect information processed by ShipUniverse.

The calculation-data system includes safeguards intended to limit abusive or unauthorized submissions, including input validation, data sanitization, request-size limits, rate limiting, and server-side processing of pseudonymous identifiers.

No website, database, or Internet transmission can be guaranteed to be completely secure.

10. Your Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live and the laws that apply, you may have rights relating to personal information about you, which may include rights to request access, correction, deletion, restriction, portability, or information concerning how personal information is used.

Because anonymous or pseudonymous maritime calculation records are intentionally not stored with a name, email address, account, or other direct identity, ShipUniverse may not always be able to determine which individual submitted a particular calculation record.

Requests concerning personal information can be submitted through the contact options available on ShipUniverse.com.

11. Children

ShipUniverse is intended primarily for maritime professionals, businesses, researchers, and adult users.

We do not knowingly collect personal information from or market our services to children under 18 years of age.

12. Third-Party Websites and Services

ShipUniverse may contain links to third-party websites, products, services, or resources.

We do not control the privacy practices of third parties. Information you provide directly to a third party is subject to that party’s privacy policy and terms.

13. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as ShipUniverse, its tools, data practices, or applicable requirements change.

The date at the top of this page identifies when the policy was most recently updated. An updated policy becomes effective when it is published on ShipUniverse.com unless otherwise stated.

14. Contact Us
