Marine DC Grid Retrofit, Converter Capacity, Efficiency & Electrification ROI Tool

Screen a retrofit from conventional AC distribution toward a shipboard DC grid. Size DC-bus current and converter capacity, map AC/DC, DC/DC and DC/AC power paths, quantify conversion losses, test reserve and critical-load capacity, compare the proposed electrical-chain efficiency with the existing plant, and calculate avoided generator energy, fuel savings, electrification value, payback and lifecycle ROI.

Vessel Electrical Mission

Use measured or design-basis electrical loads where possible. DC-grid value depends heavily on the actual conversion chain, operating profile, battery / fuel-cell integration, converter loading and whether transformers or repeated AC/DC conversion stages can really be removed.

Enter the actual post-isolation source / bus capacity available to critical loads.

The tool also calculates V × A / 1000 and uses the lower capacity as the screening bus limit.

Source-Side DC Integration

Source shares should total 100%. Direct DC sources represent sources connected without the modeled AC/DC or DC/DC stage.

Power-Electronic Converter Register

Each row represents a converter stage or parallel converter bank. Average throughput and annual hours drive losses. Peak transfer versus total installed rating drives capacity. If power passes through two conversion stages, include both rows so both losses are captured.

DC Grid Engineering Readiness

Screening tool, not electrical system design: This calculator does not perform DC short-circuit, arc-energy, converter fault-current, protection selectivity, busbar thermal, cable, harmonic, EMC, insulation-coordination, common-mode, earthing, battery safety, dynamic stability or class-approval calculations. Final marine DC-grid design must use the applicable IEC 60092 requirements, class / flag rules, converter OEM data and vessel-specific system studies.
