MSC Fleet Plus Orderbook Hits 10.47M TEU, Matching Entire Global Liner Fleet of 2007

Mediterranean Shipping Company has pushed its operated fleet and reported firm newbuilding pipeline to roughly 10.47 million TEU of combined capacity after adding another six 21,700-TEU LNG dual-fuel containerships at China’s Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard. Alphaliner data cited this week put MSC’s operating fleet at about 7.4 million TEU, around 21.5% of global liner capacity, with roughly 2.94 million TEU already in the newbuilding pipeline before the latest 130,200-TEU addition. The comparison with container shipping history is almost exact: the entire global liner fleet stood at approximately 10.467 million TEU on January 1, 2007. The 10.47-million-TEU figure is a static combination of ships operating today and firm future capacity, not a forecast that MSC will operate all of it simultaneously.

MSC Did Not Reach 10 Million TEU With One Megamax Order

The threshold is the result of six years of secondhand purchases, record newbuilding deliveries and an increasingly large pipeline of LNG dual-fuel ships concentrated at Chinese yards.
