Cruise Ship Supplier Categories Winning From the $4 Billion Drydock Boom

Cruise Drydock Supplier Opportunity

Cruise ship suppliers are chasing a $4 billion drydock market. The winners are not just selling prettier cabins.

A cruise drydock used to feel like paint, carpets, class work and a few public-room refreshes. That version is too small now. The work package is becoming a shipwide revenue and efficiency rebuild: interiors tied to cabins, HVAC tied to fuel, galleys tied to onboard spend, coatings tied to carbon, water systems tied to itinerary access and automation tied to fewer surprises after the ship leaves the yard.

The market signal

The strongest supplier opportunities sit where three budgets overlap: guest revenue, technical reliability and fuel or compliance savings. A new lounge may look like an interiors job. In practice, it pulls electrical load, lighting, HVAC balance, galley support, fire detection, water, drainage, digital systems and commissioning into the same yard window.

Revenue upgrades Cabins, suites, casinos, restaurants, bars, spas, retail and premium public spaces.
Reliability upgrades Propulsion, automation, electrical distribution, pumps, critical equipment and class work.
Efficiency upgrades HVAC, coatings, air lubrication, shore power, waste heat, water and energy monitoring.
Supplier signal: the best pitch is not “we refit ships.” It is “we protect revenue days, reduce energy waste and make the drydock package easier to execute.”

10 supplier categories winning from the drydock boom

1

Interiors and turnkey outfitting

Cabins, public rooms, restaurants, bars, casinos, lounges, spas and corridors are getting rebuilt to make older tonnage sell like newer tonnage.

2

HVAC and refrigeration

Chillers, fan coils, duct balancing, VFDs, galley ventilation and cold rooms sit near the top because comfort and hotel load both hit margin.

3

Propulsion and hydrodynamics

Propeller work, thruster grids, air lubrication, ducts, fins and performance checks gain value when fuel, carbon and schedule reliability matter.

4

Automation and digital performance

Energy dashboards, machinery controls, PMS logic, monitoring, alarms and digital twins help owners verify savings instead of trusting brochure numbers.

5

Coatings and hull performance

Low-friction coatings, hull cleaning strategy, underwater inspection and fouling analytics turn into operating-cost tools, not cosmetic line items.

6

Galleys, bars and catering systems

New dining concepts need back-of-house reality: galley equipment, pantry space, exhaust, refrigeration, fire systems, plumbing and crew workflow.

7

Bathrooms and wet units

Added cabins and full stateroom refreshes create demand for wet units, drains, vacuum toilets, lightweight panels, leak control and fast install kits.

8

Electrical and shore-power systems

Switchgear, panels, cabling, lighting, transformers, protection, metering and OPS interfaces sit underneath nearly every visible refit.

9

Water, wastewater and waste systems

AWTS, potable water, RO, UV, pumps, tanks, graywater, food-waste machines and sludge handling protect itinerary access and environmental credibility.

Energy-efficiency packages

Power saver packs, waste heat, HVAC sequencing, pump optimization, LED, battery support and verification software turn drydock into margin defense.

Supplier fit matrix

Supplier Category Buyer Trigger Best Commercial Pitch Proof Buyers Need Likely Buying Moment
Interiors New venues, cabin refreshes, casino expansion, premium lounges Higher guest yield and a newer onboard feel without a new ship Install schedule, mockups, durability, weight, fire compliance Brand-led modernization program
HVAC High hotel load, cabin additions, humid routes, guest comfort issues Comfort protection plus measurable energy reduction Baseline kWh, chiller load, humidity, complaints, commissioning data Hotel refit or energy-efficiency package
Propulsion Fuel pressure, CII pressure, speed-power drift, class survey Lower propulsion cost and better operating profile Sea trial data, CFD, hull condition, ROI by speed range Scheduled drydock with underwater work
Automation Energy savings need verification, machinery failures, crew workload Turn scattered systems into a measurable performance layer Sensor map, dashboard use, alarm quality, cybersecurity scope Power, propulsion or HVAC upgrade
Coatings Hull fouling, high fuel cost, emissions pressure, long service interval Recover speed-power performance and delay fouling penalty Coating condition, cleaning plan, drag model, route profile Hull survey and repaint window
Galleys New restaurants, bar concepts, buffet changes, room-service demand Revenue venues backed by proper back-of-house capacity Equipment list, exhaust, refrigeration, USPH, crew flow, fire systems Food-and-beverage refresh
Bathrooms Stateroom refresh, cabin additions, leak history, weight reduction Fast install, lower maintenance and fresher cabin product Wet-unit fit, drain routing, weight, water use, leak access Cabin block conversion
Electrical New venues, more cabins, shore power, LED, automation, casino expansion Reliable load growth with cleaner measurement and protection Load study, cable routes, switchgear capacity, class approval Any major hotel or technical refit
Water systems More passengers, tighter ports, aging pumps, wastewater restrictions Itinerary access, lower offload pressure and cleaner compliance record AWTS margin, potable water demand, tankage, sludge, discharge rules Cabin additions or destination-driven refit
Energy efficiency Fuel cost, carbon regulation, old hotel plant, CFO margin pressure Portfolio payback across multiple ships Measured baseline, verified savings, service support, repeatability Fleetwide drydock planning cycle
