The $584 Million Tanker Stress Test: When Does an LR2 Investment Stop Paying?

🔔 Subscribe to ShipUniverse Weekly →

SHIPUNIVERSE / PRODUCT TANKERS / 4 NOVEMBER 2026

$199 MILLION IN A QUARTER.
EIGHT LR2s FOR THE NEXT CYCLE.

TORM is making extraordinary money. Its newbuilding decision will be tested by freight rates when the tankers actually arrive, not by today's fixtures.

FREIGHT-CYCLE RISK · JOINT-VENTURE EQUITY · 2027–2030 CASH & COVENANT STRESS
$199MQ3 2026 net profit, versus $78M a year earlier
$52,575/dayActual Q3 LR2 class TCE, not company-wide average
$112,150/dayQ4 LR2 booked days as of October 28; 68% fixed
$4.33BValue of operating fleet on September 30, excluding undelivered newbuildings

TORM earned $199 million in the third quarter and then disclosed agreements for eight LR2 newbuildings in a 50/50 venture. The strongest LR2 days already booked for the fourth quarter average $112,150. The ships being ordered will earn their returns in a different rate market. A $73 million tanker can cover operating expenses at $20,000 a day and still leave its lenders short.

A booked rate is not a 2030 rate. The $112,150/day Q4 LR2 figure covers 68% of that quarter's LR2 earning days fixed by October 28. It cannot be multiplied by 365 days or applied to undelivered ships. TORM's actual Q3 LR2 average, $52,575/day, is the more grounded recent operating reference.
95 ships

Operating fleet after disposals

The Q3 release excludes vessels on order. Fleet-wide earnings and newbuilding project earnings must be modeled separately.

$4.06B

September consolidated NAV

Broker-valued operating tonnage is a current asset reference, not the market value of eight newly ordered LR2s.

$1.75–1.90B

2026 TCE guidance

Company guidance raised at the low end on November 4. It is a full-company forecast for 2026, not a rate guarantee for later deliveries.

The order is eight ships. TORM's economic exposure is half.

50/50 joint venture / illustrative contract economics

TORM disclosed the LR2 venture and vessel count, but its November 4 headline announcement did not identify a per-hull contract price, financing terms, shipyard or delivery years for these eight LR2s. The investment model therefore starts from a separately disclosed September 2026 market transaction: Scorpio Tankers' LR2 newbuildings priced at $72.8 million each for delivery in late 2029.

$584M

Eight vessels × $73M

Reference gross order value for the entire JV. This is a hypothetical price applied to TORM's vessel count, not a reported TORM order value.

$292M

TORM's 50% look-through share

Half of gross project asset cost before financing. Ownership share does not establish accounting consolidation or payment guarantees.

$116.8M

Illustrative equity contribution

TORM's half of 40% equity funding when the JV borrows 60%. The lender, leverage, installments and guarantees are unknown.

40% EQUITY
60% DEBT

Illustrative capital stack: $233.6M total JV equity ($116.8M each partner) and $350.4M JV debt. Real financing and parent support could differ significantly.

Do not conflate the fleet pipeline. Six MR resale vessels are expected in 2027–28; eight contracted MR newbuildings comprise six expected in 2029 and two in 2030, with two further MR options. The separate eight-LR2 joint venture has no confirmed delivery calendar in the November 4 headline release. The model's 2029/2030 LR2 split is an assumption, not management guidance.

At what rate does a new LR2 stop paying its debt?

One-vessel full-year operating bridge
$10.35M

Revenue at $30,000/day

345 earning days × $30,000 TCE. TCE is already net of specified voyage costs; do not subtract bunker and port costs a second time.

$3.50M

Cash OPEX + reserve

365 calendar days × $8,500/day plus $0.4M annual maintenance/drydock reserve. TORM's actual 2025 LR2 OPEX was $7,746 per operating day.

~$6.72M

Year-one debt service

$43.8M initial debt at 7% interest, plus 12-year straight-line scheduled principal. The available cash cushion is exceptionally narrow.

Interest versus profit: A lender tests cash available for debt service. A $30,000/day LR2 might generate $6.85M before interest and principal, then use about $6.72M servicing its initial borrowing. Accounting EBITDA can look healthy while distributable equity cash is nearly zero.

The cycle risk is larger than the operating-cost risk

2027–2030 economic transmission

Rates collapse before delivery

2026 earnings are being driven partly by disrupted Gulf oil flows, Russian restrictions, logistical inefficiency and LR2 employment in crude trades. Normalization can release available LR2 tonnage into clean-products trades at the same time yards deliver new ships.

Test: Compare $18,000 and $30,000 TCE/day against actual interest and scheduled amortization, not cash OPEX alone.

Contract price locked, asset value reprices

Newbuilding CAPEX is established years ahead of delivery, while secondary-market prices can move quickly. Falling vessel valuations can force additional equity even if the vessel is still trading profitably.

Test: Stress 2030 appraised value 10%, 25% and 40% below purchase price against lender loan-to-value limits.

The delivery schedule becomes the funding schedule

A delayed yard slot does not necessarily eliminate milestone payments or insurance, staffing and pre-delivery costs. Early prepayments tie up owner equity before the first voyage while financing conditions can change.

Test: Move the first LR2 tranche from 2029 to 2030 and measure lost earning days alongside delayed debt draw.

Cash leaves the venture before equity receives it

Interest, amortization, maintenance and covenant reserves come before dividends. In a 50/50 venture, cash calls, reserved matters, partner creditworthiness and distributions depend on the actual shareholder and financing agreements.

Test: Compare negative cash after scheduled debt service with the remaining value of TORM's 50% equity interest.

Four years, one dangerous timing mismatch

Illustrative LR2 project chronology
2027

20% illustrative order deposits funded before any modeled LR2 is trading. Freight rates affect expectations, not operating revenue for an undelivered ship.

2028

Yard progress and credit terms are monitored; the reference schedule has no LR2 delivery. MR resale deliveries belong to a separate program.

2029

Four LR2s hypothetically deliver midyear. Remaining equity contributions and lender draws coincide with half-year earnings.

2030

Four more LR2s hypothetically deliver midyear, while the first four face a full operating year and an evolving debt balance.

EIGHT-LR2 ORDER / LIVE CAPITAL STRESS TEST

Change newbuilding CAPEX, leverage, delivery timing and the rate path from 2027 through 2030. The calculator separates annual operating cash from equity capital calls, evaluates debt-service coverage, marks vessel equity against a 2030 price decline and measures a hypothetical loan-to-value top-up. It shows the full eight-ship JV and TORM's 50% look-through exposure.

Cells show TORM's cumulative undiscounted look-through equity gain or loss through 2030: net operating cash after debt service, minus modeled equity cash calls, plus the year-end residual vessel-equity mark. This is not a return on invested capital, an IRR, or cash realized from a sale. Click a cell to load its assumptions.

Model boundaries: Eight LR2s and a 50% JV stake are reported facts. $73M/hull comes from a separate disclosed LR2 market transaction; first delivery in 2029, a four/four split, 60% debt, 7% interest, 12-year straight-line repayment, 20% deposits, 345 earning days and all 2027–30 rates are illustrative. New deliveries are assumed midyear. Interest is calculated on opening debt each year before amortization, a simplifying conservative convention. Earnings are pre-tax and pre-central JV overhead; the model excludes hedges, depreciation, guarantees, JV distributions and shareholder disputes. Positive post-debt cash is not automatically paid out. The LTV comparison and cure assume a hypothetical 70% threshold, not a disclosed TORM loan covenant. Operating cash is not the same thing as asset market value.
