Sell the Fleet or Ride the Next Cycle? Inside Taylor Maritime’s $933 Million Decision

🔔 Subscribe to ShipUniverse Weekly →

ShipUniverse / Asset cycle / 23 October 2026

56 ships.
$933 million.
Fleet exit.

Taylor Maritime is selling its last owned bulker. The next dry-bulk rally will belong to somebody else.

Not a $933M profit. The tally is sale consideration across different vessels and dates, including joint-venture interests. Purchase prices, debt repayments, operating cash, transaction costs and shareholder distributions sit on separate ledgers.

Why sell ships that still earn $13,450 a day?

The asset-price mismatch

Secondhand market

Strong bids

Buyers were still paying prices management considered elevated relative to earnings. Taylor Maritime chose the visible resale value over more years of uncertain charter cash flow.

Forward charter market

Less certainty

More geared-bulker deliveries, soft expected trade growth, future drydock expense and older hulls create risk on both daily earnings and eventual resale price.

01 / PriceCash today has no residual-value risk

The $15.1M final agreed price is known. The vessel's value after five more years is not.

02 / YieldTCE is not owner free cash flow

Deduct daily operating costs, non-earning days, drydock, management and capital charges before comparing a hold.

03 / CycleTime can reverse an attractive sale

Unexpectedly high freight and stable resale values would reward retained ownership. The simulator below shows the crossover.

How a fleet became cash

Five turning points

London IPO provides publicly traded exposure to geared dry-bulk ships.

Grindrod investment expands the fleet and the debt-reduction task.

Vessel disposals begin to convert secondhand valuations into cash.

Bank debt repaid; sale-and-leaseback obligations remain.

Managed realisation adopted in March; final owned-ship sale agreed in October.

Taylor Maritime's 2025 interim report said ship values were historically high relative to earnings. Its then-current Clarksons-based forecast put geared fleet growth at 4.0% in 2026 against approximately 2.0% minor-bulk and grain trade growth. These were forecasts made in 2025, not final 2026 outcomes.

Other net liabilities
−$3.5M
$70.3M + $28.2M − $21.2M − $3.5M = $73.8M NAV
Fleet figure is net book value, not cash immediately available. Debt relates to the sale-and-leaseback arrangement.
Four announced capital returns
$263.4M

$218.4M completed through July 2026; a further $45M redemption announced for October 26, with cash payment expected in November. This amount is neither the gross fleet sale price nor a measure of cumulative investment profit.

Important loose end

One vessel remains on charter under a sale-and-leaseback agreement with a purchase option expiring in April 2027. Selling the last owned ship does not erase that obligation.

The money trail

Different denominators

The fleet-average TCE reflects a rapidly shrinking operating platform. The negative Q3 adjusted EBITDA cannot be projected backward across the disposed fleet.

The final-ship test

Illustrative single-vessel case
Known: $15.1M final sale price and $13,450/day latest fleet-average Q3 TCE. Not disclosed for that specific ship: age, operating cost, expected charter days, survey liability or future resale value. The model below uses editable assumptions for those items.

SELL NOW / HOLD 5 YEARS

What daily earnings and 2031 resale price justify rejecting a $15.1M offer? Change the assumptions, then click any square in the sensitivity map to test that combination.

Where the decision flips

Hold minus net sale, in USD millions. Positive cells favor holding; negative cells favor selling. Click a cell to load its TCE and year-five resale combination.

YearTCE receiptsVessel OPEXOverhead / reservesSurveyNet operating cashNet resaleDiscounted inflow
Method: TCE receipts = TCE × earning days. Daily OPEX is paid on all 365 days. Annual overhead is deducted separately; special survey is charged in year 3. Net 2031 resale is discounted back five years; all annual cash flows are discounted at year-end. Current sale and terminal resale each incur the specified selling-cost percentage. Excludes tax, bank finance, fleet overhead allocation, inflation, charter counterparty failure and regulatory retrofits not entered in reserves. The TCE is a company-average reference, not a rate contracted for the final vessel.
