VDES Before AIS Replacement Owners Should Price the 2028 Bridge Upgrade

The next AIS replacement may quietly become a 10-year bridge architecture decision
VDES is entering the regulatory framework as an alternative to AIS, and that changes the buying question. I would not treat an AIS replacement in 2026 or 2027 as a simple like-for-like radio purchase. An owner replacing AIS now has to decide whether to buy the lowest-risk AIS-only unit, pay more for a VDES-capable pathway, or at least make the bridge, antennas, cabling, ECDIS interfaces and data architecture ready for a later VDES step.
The cheap AIS replacement can become expensive if it blocks the next bridge cycle
AIS has become one of the most familiar pieces of bridge equipment in the fleet. That familiarity is exactly what creates the purchasing trap. If an owner sees AIS as a commodity replacement, the decision may stop at price, type approval, installation availability and annual test support. That is reasonable for older vessels near sale or scrapping. It is less reasonable for a ship that may operate through the next decade.
VDES does not mean every owner should rip out working AIS tomorrow. It does mean the replacement decision deserves a new cost screen. The owner should compare remaining vessel life, route profile, satellite data need, S-100 ECDIS plans, authentication value, bridge integration cost, antenna constraints, annual testing, and whether a later retrofit would cost more than making the ship ready now.
Before ordering another AIS-only unit, ask the bridge integrator for a second quote showing VDES-capable hardware or VDES-ready installation allowances.
Owners price the transceiver but miss antenna separation, cabling, bridge rack space, pilot plug and sensor interfaces, ECDIS or INS integration, cybersecurity review, crew familiarization and satellite service options.
If the vessel has more than five years of remaining commercial life, the AIS replacement should include a written VDES decision memo, even if the final purchase stays AIS-only.
AIS-only may still be the right buy for some ships. The risk is making that decision without pricing the VDES pathway first.
VDES pricing is not just the transceiver
The real buying decision sits across bridge hardware, communications architecture, data services and future integration.
Shipborne VDES or AIS equipment
The visible hardware purchase is the transceiver, display or control head, installation kit, pilot interface, sensor input links and onboard test support.
Antenna and radio-frequency installation
VDES value depends on the radio installation. Antenna placement, separation, cabling, losses, satellite capability and interference risk can all change final cost.
Bridge and ECDIS integration
The highest-value use cases may depend on moving data cleanly into ECDIS, radar, route planning, VTS interfaces, MSI workflows and shore systems.
Authentication, services and lifecycle support
The long-term value is not only position reporting. It is authenticated messaging, wider data services, software maintenance, satellite service coverage and future-proofed operating procedures.
Owners should answer these before buying another AIS-only system
These are the decision points that separate a commodity replacement from a future-ready bridge purchase.
Does the vessel have enough remaining life to benefit from VDES?
A ship with two or three years left may not justify higher integration spend. A ship expected to trade into the 2030s has a different profile. The owner should compare AIS-only savings against the possibility of paying twice: once for a replacement AIS unit and again for a VDES retrofit later.
Will the replacement still be new when the 2028 framework takes effect?
A bridge system installed shortly before the 2028 change may still feel new when VDES becomes a recognized alternative in the IMO framework. That does not automatically make AIS-only obsolete, but it does make the purchase timing more sensitive.
Does the ship need a stronger long-range data pathway?
VDES is commercially interesting because it can include satellite VDE as well as terrestrial VHF data exchange. That matters for ships that trade beyond coastal VHF networks, need better route messages, operate in remote areas, or want additional ship-shore data options without relying only on broadband satcom.
Will authenticated messaging matter for this vessel’s routes?
AIS was not built for today’s spoofing, false target and data-integrity concerns. VDES creates a path for authenticated messaging concepts, which may become valuable for ports, VTS, aids to navigation, offshore fields, pilotage areas and high-risk routes.
Will the bridge soon need more shore-to-ship maritime data?
S-100 ECDIS and S-100 data services change the data conversation. Navigational warnings, aids to navigation, VTS information, water levels, currents and other digital services may require more capable delivery paths. VDES should be evaluated as part of the future data pipe, not only as a vessel identification tool.
Can the ship make VDES-ready changes during the current work package?
Sometimes the smartest spend is not buying the final VDES service today. It is installing the right cabling, antenna access, rack space, data gateway, power feed and interface allowances while the bridge is already open.
Will VDES data actually reach the systems that need it?
A VDES transceiver has limited value if the bridge cannot use the data. Owners should verify ECDIS, radar, VDR, conning display, route planning, pilot systems, alarm management, cybersecurity and data recording before treating VDES as a future-ready purchase.
Will the supplier support the system for the whole ownership period?
VDES will develop through standards, service rollouts, type approvals, satellite deployments and national infrastructure choices. Owners should not buy stranded hardware. The supplier should explain firmware updates, satellite service support, authentication roadmap, type approval status and upgrade guarantees.
The buying comparison should include future data value
AIS-only replacement is not wrong. It is simply a narrower purchase. VDES pricing becomes stronger when the vessel has long remaining life, digital bridge upgrades, high-risk routes or future shore-to-ship data needs.

A cleaner buying path before the purchase order
Owners should not turn VDES into a last-minute bridge add-on. The right sequence starts with the vessel’s operating life and data needs.
Classify the vessel by remaining life
Short-life vessels may justify AIS-only. Long-life vessels should at least price VDES-ready installation and supplier upgrade rights.
Map the bridge data future
Identify planned ECDIS, radar, VDR, route planning, S-100, VTS, satcom and cybersecurity upgrades that could touch the AIS or VDES decision.
Price three packages
Request AIS-only, VDES-ready and VDES-capable options, with separate lines for hardware, antennas, cabling, integration, software and testing.
Check supplier roadmap
Confirm type approval status, performance standard alignment, satellite pathway, authentication support, software maintenance and annual test support.
Write the upgrade clause
If the owner chooses AIS-only today, preserve the option to migrate later with known interface, wiring, documentation and service support costs.

The best answer may be VDES-ready before VDES-full
Some owners should still buy AIS-only. A short-life vessel, emergency replacement, uncertain equipment supply or simple coastal service may not justify early VDES spending. But many owners should at least price a VDES-ready bridge package. That can mean stronger antenna planning, extra cabling, clean ECDIS interfaces, documented upgrade rights and a supplier roadmap that keeps the vessel from being locked into another 10-year AIS-only cycle.
Select one long-life vessel with a planned bridge or ECDIS upgrade and request AIS-only, VDES-ready and full VDES-capable quotations from the same integrator.
Do not approve an AIS replacement until the team has priced the future retrofit penalty and documented why AIS-only is still the better choice.
Track vessels by remaining life, AIS replacement date, S-100 ECDIS plan, VDES readiness, antenna constraints, satellite value and later retrofit exposure.
VDES does not make AIS worthless overnight. It does make every AIS replacement a strategic bridge decision. Owners should price the future before buying another system expected to last ten years.
