Britain Is Ending Official Ship-Arrival Statistics. Its Historical Data Tables Are Next.

🔔 Subscribe to ShipUniverse Weekly →

Britain's Department for Transport confirmed on October 27, 2026, that it is discontinuing its official vessel-arrival statistics, ending a dataset used to track ship movements, vessel types and carrying capacity across UK ports. No figures will be published for 2025 onward under the existing PORT06 series, and four historical spreadsheets currently listed on the government's data portal are scheduled for withdrawal in summer 2027. The last annual report recorded 83,039 cargo-vessel arrivals at major UK ports in 2024. Officials say a stakeholder consultation received no responses and have identified weekly shipping indicators from the Office for National Statistics as an alternative, although those indicators do not reproduce the full scope of the discontinued records.

The Last Official Arrival Count

Britain is ending its annual vessel-arrival series, then plans to withdraw the historical tables from its current statistics portal.

The 2024 fleet mix tells the story

Share of cargo-vessel arrivals and combined arriving deadweight at major UK ports.

Ro-Ro vessels: share of arrivals60%
Containerships: share of arrivals9%
Containerships: share of arriving DWT29%
The distinction: Only 9% of cargo-vessel arrivals were containership calls, yet those calls accounted for 29% of combined arriving deadweight capacity. Counting ship visits alone does not describe the size of the ships.

UK major ports in 2024

83,039
Estimated cargo-vessel arrivals
−2%Change in cargo-vessel arrivals compared with 2023.
19%Dover's share of cargo-vessel arrivals at major UK ports.
+3%Change in cruise-vessel arrivals from 2023.

The 83,039 figure covers cargo vessels at UK major ports. It is not a count of every ship type at every UK port.

Data-preservation distinction: Withdrawal from the current publication does not by itself establish deletion of source records, archived copies or other government maritime databases.

The Data Gap Is Bigger Than a Missing Ship Count

Five table identifiers are named in the notice. Four are currently displayed for download. Their coverage cannot be replaced one-for-one with the ONS weekly shipping series.

Official DfT publication inventory

The PORT06 tables scheduled for withdrawal

Table Published subject Information available to researchers Last reported year Current status
PORT0601 UK port ship arrivals by vessel type and deadweight Arrival counts and vessel-size/capacity characteristics, including historical comparisons. 2024 ENDING
PORT0602 UK port ship arrivals Port-level arrivals and vessel-type analysis, including major-port cruise and freight-vessel statistics. 2024 ENDING
PORT0603 Not separately listed on current DfT portal Historical table identifier; current publicly downloadable scope is not established by the listing. Not shown NOT LISTED
PORT0604 Major-port freight by nationality of parent owner of carrying vessel Freight by ownership nationality, cargo category and route classification. 2021 ENDING
PORT0605 Major-port freight by flag of carrying vessel Freight by vessel registry, cargo category and route classification. 2024, per DfT notice ENDING

The latest PORT06 publication directory does not include a separate PORT0603 file. The discontinuation notice nevertheless uses the broader PORT0601–PORT0605 designation. Table descriptions and year limits reflect the government publication, not an independent audit of every historical worksheet.

Replacement assessment

Two official data sources, different questions

DfT PORT06 Annual vessel-arrival and related freight information
Geographic scopeDetailed arrivals information for UK ports, with major-port analysis in the annual narrative.
Ship characteristicsVessel types, deadweight and gross-tonnage measures in the published arrivals tables.
Historical comparisonAnnual tables with methodology changes that were documented by DfT.
Flag and ownershipSeparate freight tables including carrying-vessel flag and parent-owner nationality.
Publication statusNo 2025-and-later series; historical tables scheduled for withdrawal in summer 2027.
ONS Shipping Indicators Higher-frequency indicators based on ship-tracking data
Geographic scopeSelected major UK ports, rather than the entire DfT arrivals publication universe.
Ship characteristicsPublished indicators distinguish cargo/tanker ship visits from other ship visits.
Historical comparisonWeekly and monthly indicators, subject to their own revisions, methodology and coverage caveats.
Flag and ownershipNot established as equivalent to PORT0604/0605 in the publicly described ONS shipping indicators.
Publication statusContinuing official statistics in development, with the latest dataset available October 22, 2026.
The replacement problem: The ONS indicators provide a valuable continuing measure of ship visits at selected ports. They should not be spliced directly into the DfT annual series as if port coverage, ship classification, data collection and capacity measurements were identical.
Port coverage

Researchers can lose a consistently presented national arrival dataset, particularly for locations outside the selected ONS port coverage.

Vessel capacity

The DfT combination of call counts and deadweight made it possible to study changes in the size profile of visiting ships.

Ownership and flag

Withdrawal of the associated tables reduces convenient access to historical freight analysis classified by registry and parent-owner nationality.

Source: UK Department for Transport PORT statistical directory and ONS weekly shipping methodology. The comparison identifies non-equivalent published series; it does not establish that every underlying administrative or commercial record is unavailable.

How Many Ship Calls Can a Cargo Statistic Hide?

Model hypothetical port-call changes when cargo volumes and average freight handled per ship change independently.

Different arrival counts, same cargo baseline

The bars compare actual 2024 major-port cargo-vessel arrivals with a hypothetical scenario under your assumptions.

2024 published count83,039
Scenario-implied arrivals75,490

Alternative possibilities

With the same selected cargo-volume change, three different assumptions about freight per ship call produce three different arrival counts.

10% less freight per call92,266
No change per call83,039
10% more freight per call75,490
Model: Hypothetical calls = baseline calls × (1 + cargo-volume change) ÷ (1 + freight handled per call change).
Interpretation limit: This simplified model assumes comparable cargo and vessel coverage in both periods. UK port freight statistics and vessel-arrival statistics have different reporting populations and methods. The tool cannot reconstruct actual 2025 port calls, determine vessel deadweight, measure utilization or replace the withdrawn DfT data.
