93,000-m³ Terra Clove Takes Two-Stroke Ammonia Propulsion From Test Cell to Sea

🔔 Subscribe to ShipUniverse Weekly →

Eastern Pacific Shipping has named the 93,000-m³ Terra Clove at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan, creating the world's first ammonia dual-fuel very large ammonia carrier and the first seagoing application of Everllence's commercial two-stroke ammonia-engine technology. The vessel can transport ammonia or LPG while its 6G60ME-C10.5-LGIA main engine can burn ammonia or conventional marine fuel. EPS says it will next bunker green ammonia supplied by LOTTE Fine Chemical and produced by Envision Energy for ammonia-burning trials in Ulsan, moving the project from engine certification into actual onboard operation.

This ship can carry the future fuel and burn it

The 93,000-m³ VLAC combines large-scale ammonia transport with the first seagoing installation of Everllence's commercial two-stroke ammonia engine.

Why Terra Clove is different from an ammonia-ready ship

Each step of the fuel pathway is now physically represented on one vessel.

Fuel Production Green Ammonia

Envision Energy-produced ammonia is scheduled to support the vessel's initial ammonia-burning trials.

→
Bunkering LOTTE Fine Chemical

EPS intends to bunker the trial fuel at LOTTE's Ulsan terminal.

→
Propulsion ME-LGIA Engine

Ammonia is injected as the principal energy source while a small quantity of pilot fuel supports combustion.

→
Cargo 93,000 m³ VLAC

The same ship can transport ammonia commercially as bulk cargo.

Fuel Safety Leak Detection

Continuous monitoring addresses ammonia's acute toxicity risk.

Engine Architecture Contained Fuel System

Ammonia-specific sensors, ventilation and double-walled piping form part of the engine safety architecture.

Exhaust HPSCR

High-pressure selective catalytic reduction is integrated with the Everllence engine package.

Human Factor Specialist Training

EPS crews have trained alongside engine specialists before ammonia-fuel operation begins.

The next milestone is operational, not ceremonial.

The significant test will be repeated onboard ammonia operation: fuel transfer, engine loading, emissions behaviour, safety-system performance and crew procedures under real shipboard conditions.

The Ammonia-Ship Milestones Are Not the Same

“Ammonia carrier,” “ammonia-ready” and “ammonia-fuelled” describe materially different vessel capabilities.

Vessel Capacity Owner What It Can Carry Main Propulsion Fuel Technology Milestone Commercial Meaning
MGC Antwerpen 46,000 m³ EXMAR Ammonia / LPG Ammonia dual-fuel using WinGD X52DF-A technology. First Commercial Ammonia DF Gas Carrier Demonstrated commercial ocean-going ammonia combustion before Terra Clove.
Ivy Cove 93,000 m³ Eastern Pacific Shipping Full ammonia cargo or LPG LPG dual-fuel / conventional fuel. First Delivered 93K VLAC Creates long-haul ammonia transport capacity but does not currently use ammonia as main-engine fuel.
Lilac Cove 93,000 m³ Eastern Pacific Shipping Ammonia / propane / butane LPG dual-fuel / conventional fuel. Second EPS 93K VLAC Adds ammonia transport capacity while retaining conventional LPG-fuel economics.
Terra Clove 93,000 m³ Eastern Pacific Shipping Ammonia / LPG Ammonia + conventional marine fuel. First Ammonia DF VLAC Combines long-haul ammonia logistics with direct consumption of ammonia as propulsion fuel.
Terra Clove First VLAC + Ammonia Fuel

The combination of 93K cargo scale and ammonia propulsion is the key milestone.

Engine First Everllence at Sea

First seagoing application of the B&W ME-LGIA two-stroke platform.

Registry First Singapore

First ammonia dual-fuel commercial newbuild entering the Singapore registry.

Next Test Operating Hours

Reliability, emissions, fuel handling and crew performance must now be proven at sea.

Interactive Commercialisation Chain

How Much of Ammonia Shipping Has Actually Been Proven?

Select each stage to separate technology that has reached real operations from the parts of the commercial system that still need much more operating experience.

TECHNOLOGY

Full-size ammonia two-stroke engine

Everllence's ME-LGIA has progressed through research combustion, full-scale testing, factory acceptance and type approval. Terra Clove moves the technology into its first seagoing commercial installation.

Current Evidence Factory + type approval
Terra Clove Role First Everllence sea application
Next Evidence Needed Thousands of operating hours
Status Operational transition
ShipUniverse Evidence Reading Technically demonstrated, service experience still limited

The engine is beyond laboratory proof, but long-duration reliability, maintenance and emissions behaviour now have to be demonstrated at sea.

Evidence maturity 80%
Evidence maturity is a ShipUniverse editorial screening scale, not a classification, regulatory or technology-readiness certification. A high score means more of that specific stage has been demonstrated; it does not imply ammonia propulsion is commercially mature overall.
