Coast Guard Detains MSC Poesia in Miami. An Entire 11-Night Caribbean Cruise Is Canceled.

The U.S. Coast Guard detained MSC Cruises' MSC Poesia at PortMiami on November 1, 2026, after inspectors identified deficiencies in the ship's onboard systems, preventing the vessel from departing on an 11-night Caribbean voyage. After two days at the terminal, MSC announced on November 3 that the cruise was canceled because the regulatory matter could not be resolved in time. More than 2,000 people were reportedly aboard when the detention occurred. The 92,627-GT vessel was scheduled to visit six Caribbean and Central American destinations before returning to Miami on November 12. MSC confirmed full cruise-fare refunds and assistance with travel home, while passenger correspondence reported on November 4 describes an additional future cruise credit equal to 100% of the fare paid. The Coast Guard has not disclosed which systems failed its inspection or established a public departure-clearance date.

How the Cancellation Unfolded

Confirmed events and announced arrangements, November 1–5, 2026.

Sunday | November 1 Passengers board. Departure blocked.

MSC Poesia was scheduled to depart PortMiami at 5 p.m. Coast Guard inspectors detained the ship while examining compliance with U.S. and international requirements.

Monday | November 2 The ship remains alongside.

MSC reports continued cooperation with the Coast Guard. Passengers remain aboard while the sailing is delayed.

Tuesday | November 3 MSC cancels the 11-night voyage.

The cruise line states that the outstanding regulatory matter cannot be resolved in time. Full fare refunds and assistance getting home are announced.

Wednesday | November 4 Specific system deficiencies remain unidentified publicly.

The Coast Guard has confirmed deficiencies in onboard systems but has not specified the equipment involved or a date for release.

Thursday | November 5, noon Passenger disembarkation accommodation ends.

Passengers have reportedly been permitted to remain aboard until noon while making alternate travel arrangements.

Operational distinction: The Coast Guard detained the vessel. MSC subsequently canceled the commercial voyage. Inspectors confirmed unspecified onboard-system deficiencies, not a publicly established fire, propulsion failure, lifesaving-equipment fault or passenger-health incident.
Source basis: U.S. Coast Guard Sector Miami statement reported November 3; MSC Cruises cancellation statement; official MSC vessel specifications and itinerary; CBS News and Cruise Hive reporting. Passenger count is an estimate from reporting, not the final onboard manifest.

What Must Happen Before MSC Poesia Can Sail Again?

A Coast Guard release decision and a cruise-line commercial schedule are separate. Both need to be resolved before the next voyage can operate.

The Port State Control Sequence

A simplified regulatory workflow; it does not imply the corrective measures have already been performed.

01 | CONFIRMED Examination U.S. inspectors identify deficiencies in onboard systems.
→
02 | CONFIRMED Detention The vessel is not cleared to leave PortMiami.
→
03 | NOT VERIFIED Correct & Verify Outstanding conditions must be addressed to the Coast Guard's satisfaction.
→
04 | NOT VERIFIED Release & Resume Departure clearance is required before commercial voyages resume.

Seven Questions with Different Levels of Evidence

This distinction matters for insurers, cruise operators, port authorities, passenger agents and vessel managers.

Confirmed Reported passenger correspondence Not publicly established
↔ Scroll from either synchronized horizontal bar.
IssueEvidence StatusWhat Is EstablishedCommercial Consequence / Missing Detail
Detention & deficiencies Confirmed Sector Miami detained MSC Poesia November 1 after inspection identified onboard-system deficiencies. Which systems failed, corrective work required and release timing remain undisclosed.
Voyage cancellation Confirmed MSC canceled the November 1–12 itinerary on November 3. One full scheduled voyage is lost; no actual voyage revenue or cancellation-cost total has been disclosed.
Fare refunds Confirmed MSC has committed to refund all affected passengers' cruise fares. Total refund value depends on actual paid fares, occupancy, booking adjustments and included purchases.
Future cruise credit Reported letter Passenger correspondence reportedly offers a credit matching 100% of the fare paid, subject to booking conditions. Credit redemption and accounting treatment are unknown. Credit face value is not an immediate cash payment.
Travel-home support Reported letter MSC confirmed assistance; the reported letter specifies eligible travel-change, transportation and hotel claims. Actual eligible claims, payments and reimbursement ceilings have not been disclosed.
Prior April inspection Trade reporting Maritime reporting cites an April finding involving operational readiness of lifesaving appliances, without detention. No public evidence connects that earlier finding to the current detention.
November 12 sailing Unresolved A separate 10-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary is still listed for departure November 12. No confirmed release date; the next sailing should not be described as either canceled or cleared.
Confirmed Lost Voyage Nov 1–12

Eleven nights, six scheduled destination calls and full refunds promised to affected guests.

Next Schedule Watch Nov 12

A different 10-night Eastern Caribbean cruise remains advertised. Sailing requires Coast Guard clearance.

Important for cruise ports: Six planned overseas calls were lost, affecting potential cruise-related activity. The actual revenue impact at each port is unknown because spending, berth charges, port-fee terms, excursions and vendor contracts have not been released.
Reporting basis: Coast Guard November 3 statement, MSC Cruises cancellation statement, Cruise Hive November 4 passenger-letter reporting, Maritime Executive April inspection reference and MSC published itinerary. This is a status board, not a determination of legal liability or the underlying technical fault.

What Could One Canceled Cruise Cost?

Model fare refunds, eligible passenger assistance, future cruise-credit exposure and the revenue opportunities lost when an 11-night, six-port cruise never leaves the terminal.

Prepaid Purchase Refunds$264,000
Travel-Home Assistance$495,000

Redemption-Adjusted Credit Face Value$1.10M
Modeled Onboard Spending Opportunity$1.57M
Potential Shoreside Spending Across Six Calls$739,200
Assumed Guest-Nights Not Sailed24,200
The modeled refunds and assistance are separate from future credits and commercial spending opportunities.

The Different Types of Exposure

Values are shown on a common dollar scale, but represent different categories. They should not be added together as a single financial loss.

Fare + Prepaid Refunds$3.01M
Travel Assistance$495,000
Potentially Redeemed Credit Face Value$1.10M
Potential Shoreside Spending Not Realized$739,200
Do not combine the totals into a profit-loss figure. Fare refunds reverse amounts previously collected. Future cruise credits are conditional concessions on later bookings; face value is not an immediate cash expense. Lost onboard and shoreside spending is gross opportunity, not profit. Actual operating-cost savings, commissions, taxes, insurance, rebooking terms and repair costs are unknown.
Research basis and model calculations

Confirmed voyage parameters: 11 scheduled nights, six planned destination port calls and a ship with published capacity for up to 3,223 guests. Reporting indicates more than 2,000 people aboard at detention, but does not establish the final fare-paying passenger count or whether that figure included crew. The default 2,200 paying guests, $1,250 fare, $120 in prepaid extras, $225 assistance cost and all spending assumptions are illustrative, not MSC financial disclosures.

Cruise fare refunds = guest count × paid average fare. Prepaid refunds = guest count × eligible prepaid amount. Travel assistance = guest count × assumed average eligible reimbursement. Gross refund/assistance = the sum of those three categories. The reported future-credit offer equals the fare paid, so the modeled face value matches cruise fare refunds. Redemption-adjusted face value is future-credit face value × selected redemption percentage. It is not an estimate of accounting liability or actual incremental cost to operate future sailings.

Foregone onboard spending opportunity = guests × 11 nights × selected nightly spending. Shoreside spending opportunity = guests × six ports × visitor participation × spending per visiting passenger. Both are gross hypothetical sales opportunities; they exclude costs, fees, taxes, and local leakage. The tool does not assume these amounts were contracted, paid or lost. It also excludes any subsequent cruise cancellations, which remain unconfirmed.
