China’s Shipbuilding Orders Surge 163% as Its Global Share Reaches 81.8%

🔔 Subscribe to ShipUniverse Weekly →

China's shipyards captured 81.8% of global newbuilding orders by deadweight tonnage during the first nine months of 2026, according to official figures released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on October 23. Chinese yards secured 175.29 million dwt of new orders, a 163.2% increase from the same period last year, while their outstanding orderbook climbed to 399.13 million dwt, representing 72.4% of the global total. The concentration is extending across tankers, containerships, vehicle carriers and alternative-fuel vessels, raising questions about competition, construction capacity and the availability of alternative shipyards for international owners.

81.8% of the World's New Ship Orders Went to China

China's share of global orders expanded by 14.5 percentage points in just one year, measured by deadweight tonnage.

China's Share Across Three Industry Indicators

The orders being placed now are more concentrated in China than the ships being delivered today.

Data: China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, October 23, 2026 and October 17, 2025. Global tonnage and non-China volumes are ShipUniverse calculations obtained by dividing China's published tonnage by its reported global share. Values are approximate because official shares are rounded. Orders and deliveries cover January–September; orderbook figures are September 30 snapshots. All percentages in this module are on a dwt basis unless explicitly stated.

The 2028 Delivery Wall

Taking an order is one challenge. Building the ship within the promised delivery window is another.

China's Share of Three High-Demand Ship Types

The Broader Industrial Constraint

Chinese Yard Coverage 4.2 Years

BIMCO's estimated orderbook coverage using peak annual output over the preceding five years as the capacity benchmark.

Research notes: Delivery projections and orderbook coverage are drawn from BIMCO's October 2026 analysis. Ship-type contracting shares and reported vessel counts come from Chinese industry and CCTV reporting. DWT and CGT are different measures and cannot be summed or directly converted with one universal factor. Orderbook coverage is an indicator, not a promised delivery lead time for a specific ship.

What If Ship Orders Shift Away From China?

Explore how a change in China's global order share would redistribute newbuilding demand across competing shipyards, using the first nine months of 2026 as a reference.

The default reproduces the estimated 2026 market distribution.
Tool assumptions and methodology: The default 214.3 million dwt global new-order market is derived from China's reported 175.29 million dwt divided by its rounded 81.8% share. The estimated non-China reference volume is approximately 39.0 million dwt. The 67.3% preset reflects China's actual January–September 2025 share, applied hypothetically to the selected volume; it is not a forecast. All scenarios use a nine-month contracting-volume reference, not full-year annual demand. Reference vessel equivalents are total dwt divided by the chosen illustrative vessel size and rounded to the nearest whole vessel. They do not represent actual vessel counts or a homogeneous fleet mix. The tool models order allocation only; it does not establish shipyard availability, construction capacity, pricing, technical suitability, delivery dates or the feasibility of shifting contracts.
