Dockworker unions are preparing coordinated strikes, stoppages and demonstrations for Friday, October 30, with organizers now claiming participation at more than 100 ports across 17 countries and four continents. Major gateways named include Genoa, Gioia Tauro, Marseille-Fos, Piraeus, Tangier and Mersin, with additional support reported from Hamburg, Veracruz, India and ILWU Local 10 workers in San Francisco and Oakland. The operational threat is not uniform: Italy has a formally registered nationwide 24-hour port strike, France has announced action across its ports, while several other countries currently have demonstrations or solidarity actions rather than confirmed terminal-wide shutdowns. Organizers estimate as many as 40,000 containers could be delayed, but have not published a methodology and that figure has not been independently verified.
More Than 100 Actions Does Not Mean 100 Port Shutdowns
The mobilisation includes full 24-hour strikes, shorter stoppages, rallies and solidarity actions. Cargo exposure will depend heavily on the port, union coverage, terminal and local legal framework.
The Mediterranean Is the Main Cargo-Risk Zone
The strongest evidence for real operational interruption currently sits at Italian and French ports and at several core Mediterranean gateways. Outside that region, the campaign is broader than the confirmed shutdown risk.
| Port / Market | Current Status | Action Evidence | Operational Exposure | Container Context | What Could Happen Friday | What Is Not Yet Confirmed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Italian Ports Genoa · Gioia Tauro · Livorno · Trieste · Ravenna + others | 24-Hour Strike | Italy's transport ministry formally lists a nationwide 24-hour strike for port-sector workers on October 30. | Vessel loading and discharge, terminal labor, gates and inland connections may all be affected depending on local adherence. | Gioia Tauro alone handled about 4.49 million TEU in 2025, making it one of the Mediterranean's largest transshipment hubs. | Berth delays, postponed calls, missed transshipment windows and yard backlog are plausible, particularly at highly connected hubs. | No current public source establishes that every Italian terminal will cease all operations for the full 24 hours. |
| Marseille-Fos / France Major southern French gateway | National Action | Kuehne+Nagel says a separate industrial action is announced across all French ports for October 30. | Container, RoRo, bulk and energy operations could be affected depending on how CGT and local dockworkers implement the action. | Marseille-Fos handled about 1.45 million TEU and 75 million tonnes of total cargo in 2025. | Vessel-working windows could be shortened or lost; truck and terminal flows may also be disrupted. | Exact October 30 operating hours and terminal-by-terminal stoppage details were still not public in the latest logistics advisory. |
| Piraeus Greece | Strike Mobilization | ENEDEP is part of the founding coalition and supporting Greek unions describe an All-Piraeus strike on October 30. | Container terminals, ferries, ship repair and landside logistics can all become exposed if broader Piraeus participation materializes. | Piraeus handled approximately 4.64 million TEU in 2025. | February's coordinated action shows that vessels can remain alongside or at anchor when the wider port workforce joins. | The precise percentage of October 30 container-terminal labor joining the action has not been publicly quantified. |
| Tangier Med Morocco | Named Participant | Morocco's ODT is a founding union and Tangier is repeatedly named among the major participating gateways. | Even a partial slowdown matters because Tangier is a major transshipment point linking Asia-Europe, Atlantic and Mediterranean services. | Tanger Med handled a record 11.1 million TEU in 2025. | A localized work stoppage could create missed connection risk for relay and transshipment cargo. | A terminal-wide 24-hour shutdown has not been independently confirmed. |
| Mersin Turkey | Named Participant | Liman-İş is a founding union and Mersin is included in current action notices. | Eastern Mediterranean container and regional cargo schedules are exposed. | Mersin is a major Turkish container and hinterland gateway. | Stoppages could affect terminal working windows and inland cargo handoff. | Current public notices do not establish the duration or breadth of the local October 30 stoppage. |
| Hamburg Germany | Support Reported | Organizers report participation from Hamburg port workers associated with Germany's ver.di union. | Operational exposure depends entirely on the form of the local action. | Hamburg is one of northern Europe's largest container gateways. | Demonstrations or short stoppages could affect individual terminals without producing a port-wide shutdown. | No public evidence currently establishes a full Hamburg port strike. |
| San Francisco / Oakland United States | ILWU Local 10 Support | Organizers report support from ILWU Local 10. | Oakland container exposure would depend on whether support becomes actual work stoppage. | Oakland is the commercially important container gateway in the pair. | Rallies or symbolic job actions are possible. | No current announcement establishes a full Oakland terminal shutdown. |
