One Secretive Shipowner Now Carries Nearly 40% of the Crude Crossing Hormuz

A South Korean tanker group that was barely known outside shipping circles before the Iran conflict has become one of the most important pieces of infrastructure keeping Persian Gulf oil moving. Sinokor Group-owned vessels carried an estimated 105.6 million barrels of crude through the Strait of Hormuz in September, equivalent to 37% of the approximately 286.3 million barrels that crossed the strait, according to a Bloomberg analysis of Vortexa, Equasis and Signal Ocean data. That was more than the 97.3 million barrels carried by ships owned by Bahri, Kuwait Oil Tanker Company and ADNOC's shipping arm combined. The calculation is based on vessel ownership rather than vessel operator or charterer, an important distinction in a market where ships are frequently leased and rechartered.

Hormuz Crude Ownership · September 2026

One Owner Moved More Crude Than Three Gulf National Fleets Combined

Sinokor's position emerged from a massive tanker build-up followed by an unusually high willingness to keep ships inside the conflict zone.

Sinokor 36.9% 105.6M barrels
Bahri + KOTC + ADNOC Shipping 34.0% 97.3M barrels combined
All Other Owners 29.1% ~83.4M barrels
The 105.6M-barrel analysis is ownership-based. It should not be read as Sinokor commercially operating every cargo itself; tanker ownership, technical management, chartering and cargo control can sit with different companies.
How the New Gulf Oil System Works

Sinokor Became the Backbone of a Shuttle Network

The commercial advantage came from being willing to dedicate large numbers of VLCCs to short, dangerous and increasingly inefficient round trips.

FactorCurrent EvidenceCommercial EffectWhy Sinokor BenefitsRisk / Constraint
Shuttle Architecture >70% transferred offshoreMore than 70% of August Hormuz-crossing crude changed tankers off Fujairah or Sohar. One crude cargo now consumes both a shuttle ship and a long-haul tanker. Large dedicated VLCC inventory lets Sinokor keep ships cycling inside the Gulf. STS equipment, crews, weather and anchorage capacity become bottlenecks.
Sinokor Fleet 73 recently acquired VLCCsLloyd's List says the secondhand vessels have all been delivered during the current buying campaign. Creates scale that few independent owners can match. Ships can be dedicated to high-risk work without abandoning every other trade. Large exposure to one conflict zone increases casualty concentration.
Shuttle Fleet ~80 VLCCsKpler says the wider Gulf of Oman shuttle fleet has expanded to about 80 vessels. Removes a large block of VLCC capacity from normal global trading. Kpler estimates roughly half of this fleet is controlled by Sinokor. More vessels have not solved congestion because cycle times are lengthening.
Cycle Efficiency ~23 days nowKpler says average shuttle round trips have risen from an optimal 9–10 days to roughly 23 days. Each exported barrel consumes more vessel-days. Fleet size becomes more valuable as operational efficiency deteriorates. Longer cycles raise freight and require still more ships.
Security Exposure 7 Sinokor-owned ships hitLloyd's List counts seven owned tankers damaged by missiles or projectiles. War-risk premiums, crew bonuses and freight rates remain elevated. Owners willing to accept the risk gain bargaining power. A serious casualty or crew refusal could remove capacity abruptly.
Fujairah 54%STS shareKpler's August shuttle-transfer split.
Sohar 45%STS shareNearly equal second transfer hub.

Ship Universe Hormuz Concentration Stress Test

If Sinokor Pulled Back, How Much Capacity Would Need Replacing?

Stress-test the September volume against a partial withdrawal and different shuttle-cycle assumptions.

Replacement Capacity Requirement 7 VLCCs

A 25% reduction in Sinokor's September carried volume would require roughly seven continuously cycling VLCC equivalents under the selected assumptions.

Crude Displaced26.4M bbl
Daily Flow0.88M b/d
Full Cargoes13.2
Hormuz Sept. Share9.2%
Scenario model only. It assumes displaced Sinokor-owned capacity must be replaced one-for-one and uses September's 105.6M barrels as the baseline. Actual response could include national fleets, direct voyages, pipelines, different STS arrangements, lower exports, smaller tankers or cargo deferral.
