Cruise Waste Heat Recovery

Cruise ships may be throwing away more heat than fuel.

Every engine-room veteran knows the stack, coolers and condensers tell the truth. On a cruise ship, the hotel makes that truth more expensive. The same vessel paying to cool cabins, heat water, dry laundry, make freshwater and run galleys may also be dumping thermal energy through exhaust, jacket water, condensers, ventilation and refrigeration loops.

52%overall efficiency reported in low-efficiency operating cases

10heat streams worth screening before drydock

The fast read

The best heat-recovery project is not always the most advanced machine. It is the closest match between a hot stream and a paying load. Exhaust gas and jacket water usually get the first serious review. Absorption cooling, hot water, freshwater, HVAC reheat and thermal storage often beat pure electricity generation. Lower-grade streams earn their place when the pipe run is short, the hours are high and the load is already there.

Commercial read: treat waste heat as a CAPEX allocation problem. The first dollar goes where heat grade, operating hours and onboard demand overlap.

Three buying lanes

Lane 1

Direct heat use

Hot water, steam, freshwater preheat, laundry, galley service and HVAC reheat. Often the cleanest first-dollar case.

Best source: exhaust, jacket water
Why it wins: fewer conversion losses
Lane 2

Cooling from heat

Absorption chillers and heat-driven cooling can use recovered heat to reduce electric chiller load.

Best source: exhaust, HT cooling water
Why it wins: cruise ships need cold air
Lane 3

Power conversion

ORC and steam-turbine systems turn heat into electrical power where heat is high enough and ship load is steady.

Best source: exhaust, multi-source heat
Why it loses: CAPEX and space can bite

10 places to recover heat

Heat Stream Best Technology Fit Best Onboard Buyer Screening Value Range Spend First When
1. Exhaust gas Exhaust gas boiler, steam turbine, ORC, absorption chiller Steam, hot water, electricity, chilled water $1.0M to $5.5M/year Long sea hours, high engine load, boiler fuel still being burned
2. Jacket water Hot-water recovery, heat pump, freshwater preheat, storage Domestic hot water, HVAC reheat, laundry, freshwater $600K to $2.8M/year Hotel heat demand runs while engines are online
3. Charge-air cooling Low-temperature ORC, heat pump, preheat loop Hot-water preheat, absorption support, ORC $250K to $1.6M/year Measured temperature and flow stay useful across normal loads
4. Condenser rejection Condenser heat reclaim, heat pump, thermal storage Hot water, pools, laundry, service water $150K to $900K/year Cooling and hot-water demand overlap in warm itineraries
5. Engine cooling circuits Low-temperature heat network, heat pumps, heat exchangers HVAC reheat, potable water, freshwater preheat $250K to $1.4M/year A plant-room refit already opens piping and controls
6. HVAC exhaust Run-around coils, air-to-air recovery, demand-control ventilation Make-up air, humidity control, cabin comfort $100K to $700K/year Air handlers and controls are already due for work
7. Refrigeration Heat-reclaim condenser, CO2 heat pump, hot-water preheat Galley hot water, laundry, domestic hot water $75K to $500K/year Cold rooms and provisions plant run near useful heat loads
8. Galley heat Dishwasher heat recovery, hood controls, exhaust recovery Dishwashing, sanitation water, make-up air $50K to $400K/year Galley ventilation or dishwashing equipment is being replaced
9. Laundry Drain-water recovery, dryer exhaust recovery, condensate return Wash water, steam reduction, drying support $75K to $550K/year Laundry is centralized and runs daily at high volume
10. LNG cold energy Cold-energy HVAC, refrigeration assist, ORC condenser sink Provision cooling, air conditioning, ORC efficiency $100K to $1.0M/year The ship is LNG-fueled and cooling demand is close to vaporization
Range note: these are planning bands for large cruise ships. Real value depends on measured temperature, flow, operating hours, avoided fuel price, space, controls and the nearest useful load.

Technology decision matrix

Technology Best Heat Grade Commercial Strength Main Constraint Drydock Gate
Exhaust gas boiler High Mature, direct steam or hot-water value Space, soot, backpressure, low-load operation Stack survey, engine load profile, steam demand
ORC Medium to high Creates electrical power from otherwise lost heat CAPEX, space, cooling sink, part-load output Measured heat balance and parasitic-load model
Absorption chiller Medium to high Turns heat into cooling where hotel load is heavy Space, cooling water, control integration Chiller plant profile and tropical-route demand
High-temperature heat pump Low to medium Upgrades waste heat into useful steam or hot water Electric input, refrigerant, maintenance skills Temperature lift and boiler-displacement value
Thermal storage Low to high Moves useful heat from when it exists to when it pays Tank or sorption-system volume, controls Sea, maneuvering and port-mode demand curve
Condenser heat reclaim Low Captures service heat from cooling systems Low temperature and chiller-control risk Hot-water demand and chiller sequencing review
LNG cold-energy recovery Cryogenic cold sink Reduces cooling load or improves power-cycle efficiency Safety, class, proximity and duty-cycle match LNG vaporization profile and cooling-load map
