From Hull Cleaning to Tank Inspections 9 Ship Maintenance Jobs Going Robotic
A ship doesn't care how clever the robot is. It cares whether the work is finished before sailing. That's why the first real gains are coming from dirty, repetitive jobs that need divers, scaffolding or tank entry. Cargill's new Singapore trial puts a major operator behind a shift that's already happening in repair yards and offshore fleets.
Cargill is testing the economics, not just the machine
Cargill and Neptune Robotics have entered an 18-month MPA-supported programme to clean and inspect Cargill vessels at Singapore. The plan: track cleaning performance, hull-condition data and fuel use before and after treatment. Neptune says its remotely operated system can handle a full-draught Capesize within 24 hours and currents up to four knots. Those are supplier capabilities, not measured results from the new trial.
Nine jobs, with the readiness clearly marked
The useful distinction is between work already being delivered, limited deployments and technology still proving itself. “Robotic” usually means a skilled person operates or supervises the equipment.
| Maintenance job | What is already happening | Readiness | Buyer's test |
|---|---|---|---|
01In-water hull cleaning | Neptune operates cleaning services; Cargill now provides trial vessels and performance data. | In service | Port clearance, coating compatibility, debris capture. |
02Hull grooming & imaging | Carnival Pride is piloting an on-board Jotun HullSkater for frequent light cleaning and inspection. | Fleet pilot | Repeatability, image quality, voyage access. |
03Drydock blasting | C&C Marine reports over 700 barges processed; Damen Dunkerque received five blast/paint robots. | In service | Accepted surface profile, recovery, m²/hour. |
04Hull coating application | Damen's units switch to painting heads; Beerenberg used robotic multi-coat painting on an FPSO. | In service | Film thickness, coverage, rework, curing. |
05Tank visual surveys | DNV offers drone-assisted ballast/cargo-tank surveys; ScoutDI reports an ABS-accepted FPSO tank inspection. | In service | Class survey plan and close-up evidence. |
06Tank sludge removal | SBM Offshore and Ambipar report robotic sludge removal on an operating FPSO with staff outside the tank. | Early use | Waste handling, atmosphere controls, tank geometry. |
07Steel thickness gauging | DNV has demonstrated drone-carried contact ultrasonics; class rules still govern approved measurements. | Specialist use | UT calibration and approved measurement supplier. |
08Propeller polishing | SubBlue markets ROV-based polishing; published field tests show promise and access limitations. | Early service | Blade finish, attachment, fouling recovery. |
09Weld & crack inspection | Crawler-based weld NDT and AI image screening are progressing, but this is not autonomous repair approval. | Developing | Qualified NDT operator and class acceptance. |
Evidence spans ocean-going ships, barges, FPSOs and shipyards. A proven result in one setting does not establish equivalent performance on every ship type.
Three questions before approving the invoice
Demand a coating finish, approved survey record, UT reading or completed square metres. Not “robot hours”.
Work during cargo operations has value only if it removes a genuine schedule constraint or avoids a second call.
Check coating-maker limits, port permissions, captured waste, insurance, recovery plans and class sign-off.

Class guidance: IACS UR Z17 covers approval of remote-inspection and thickness-measurement suppliers. Weld NDT developments remain more conditional than routine hull cleaning.
Would a robot service pay on your vessel?
Choose a sample job, then replace every figure with your own quote and operating data. These are illustrative scenarios, not published supplier rates. A positive result is an annual cost advantage, not an equipment-return forecast.
Method: (manual cost − robot cost) × annual jobs + (avoided hours ÷ 24) × daily vessel value × jobs + annual fuel tonnes × bunker price × verified reduction % − other annual costs. No double counting of time already included in service quotes. Fuel savings must be normalised for speed, load, weather and operating profile; confirm coating, class and port permissions separately.
