Three Naval Drones Hit a Container Ship off Bulgaria. Now the Vessel Has Sunk.

🔔 Subscribe to ShipUniverse Weekly →

The core facts are now solid. Bulgaria’s Transport Ministry said the Liberian-flagged CONTSHIP JET was hit by sea drones about 17 nautical miles east of Cape Kaliakra while sailing from Haifa to Constanța with 421 containers on board. Bulgaria’s Defence Ministry said the hit was observed by naval monitoring systems and a French maritime patrol aircraft, and that three impacts were observed. All 18 crew members were rescued in a coordinated Bulgarian operation. ZIM, which said the ship was chartered to it, separately told customers that the crew had been safely evacuated and the condition of the vessel and cargo was being assessed.

ShipUniverse | Black Sea Container Security Alert

Confirmed: Drone Strike, Crew Rescue, Sinking, and Drifting Dangerous Cargo

The official record now establishes four things: CONTSHIP JET was hit by sea drones, the full crew escaped, the vessel later sank, and dangerous-goods containers are drifting in the area. The remaining unanswered issue is attribution, not whether a major commercial-shipping incident occurred.

Attack location 17 nm East of Cape Kaliakra, according to Bulgaria’s transport ministry
Crew rescued 18 Entire crew removed in Bulgarian search-and-rescue operation

Navigation hazard 20+ Drifting containers with dangerous goods after the sinking

Evidence Board

This separates what is officially established from what still needs follow-up. It keeps route planners, insurers, and cargo teams focused on the actionable issues.

Item What is confirmed Commercial relevance Still unresolved
Attack Confirmed
Bulgarian authorities said the ship was struck by sea drones and that three hits were observed.
This is direct kinetic exposure to merchant shipping in the western Black Sea, not just a port-security concern. No official attribution has been made public.
Voyage profile Confirmed
The ship was sailing from Haifa to Constanța carrying 421 containers.
The route profile broadens the concern beyond a narrow Ukraine grain-shipping frame. Contents of all containers have not been fully disclosed publicly.
Crew outcome Confirmed
All 18 crew members abandoned ship and were rescued.
Casualty avoidance limits the human tragedy, but not the operating or insurance consequences. No public crew injury report beyond initial rescue statements.
Sinking Confirmed
Official Bulgarian navigation warning later listed the ship as sunk.
This has moved from damage control into wreck, cargo-loss, and route-hazard management. Salvage and wreck-marking plans are not yet public in the official warnings.
Dangerous cargo adrift Critical
More than 20 containers with dangerous goods are reported adrift.
This creates immediate navigation, pollution, and liability issues for ships transiting the area. The full container recovery timeline and final environmental impact remain unknown.
First pressure point Container operators

Route-risk reviews, customer notices, crew-safety procedures, and possible schedule disruption come first.

Second pressure point Underwriters and P&I

War-risk pricing, navigational advisories, wreck liability, and dangerous-cargo exposure all move higher.

Third pressure point Cargo owners

Cargo delay, loss allocation, dangerous-goods handling, and contingency inventory planning become immediate issues.

Fourth pressure point Regional navies

Surveillance, early warning, route protection, and wreck-hazard response now overlap in one operating area.

ShipUniverse Interactive | Container Route Exposure

How Much Could Black Sea Security Friction Cost a Container Operator?

Model the commercial effect of rerouting, waiting time, war-risk premiums, and extra cargo-handling cost after a shock event such as the loss of CONTSHIP JET. This is not a loss-adjustment tool for the incident itself. It is a forward-looking route-risk model for operators and cargo planners.

Scenario

Route Inputs

Reference: CONTSHIP JET was reported by Bulgaria’s transport ministry as carrying 421 containers. That figure is used as the default loaded-container count per exposed sailing, but you can replace it with your own service assumptions.
Monthly voyages crossing the exposed route area.

Modeled Monthly Exposure

Total added monthly route cost $0

Combined effect of rerouting, waiting time, additional premium, and cargo-handling friction under your selected assumptions.

Added vessel-days 0 Reroute days plus delay days across affected sailings.
Added cost per sailing $0 Total added monthly cost divided by monthly sailings.
Added cost per loaded container $0 Total cost divided by loaded containers across all monthly sailings.
Containers on rerouted sailings 0 Loaded containers carried by sailings you assume are rerouted.

Cost build-up

Additional vessel time cost$0
War-risk / security premium$0
Extra cargo handling / contingency$0

Monthly detail

Rerouted sailings 0 Monthly sailings assumed to take a longer route.
Delayed sailings 0 Monthly sailings assumed to wait or slow steam without rerouting.
Total monthly loaded containers 0 Used to estimate added cost per carried container.

How rerouting share changes the monthly bill

This sensitivity chart keeps all other assumptions fixed and varies only the share of sailings rerouted.

Rerouted share Added vessel-days Premium cost Handling cost Total added cost
Modeling note: this tool does not estimate the actual loss of CONTSHIP JET. It is a scenario planner for future sailings after a route-security shock. Premiums, delay shares, daily ship costs, and extra handling cost are all user assumptions.
