The fare is only the first sale.
Anyone who has spent time looking at cruise-ship economics knows the advertised fare is only one part of the business. The harder job starts after a guest books: sell the right upgrade, meal, excursion or island experience without making the holiday feel like a checkout line. Norwegian's latest quarter puts a number on that second sale.
Three cruise groups. Three big second sales.
| Cruise group | Onboard + other | Share of total | YoY growth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carnival Corp. Quarter to Aug 31 | $2.906B | 34.5% | +6.7% |
| Royal Caribbean Group Quarter to Sep 30 | $1.706B | 30.5% | +13.6% |
| Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Quarter to Sep 30 | $1.001B | 34.0% | +12.7% |
Source: 2026 Q3 company filings; percentages calculated from reported revenue. Carnival's fiscal quarter ends one month before Norwegian's and Royal Caribbean's. “Onboard and other” also includes items such as ship charters and concession revenue, so it is not a pure measure of guests' discretionary purchases.
Passenger-ticket revenue fell about $104 million year over year, while onboard and other revenue rose about $113 million. Total revenue was nearly unchanged. Stronger onboard spend helped beat quarterly guidance, even as constant-currency net yield remained down 6.7% year over year.
The island is free to enter; Great Tides Waterpark requires a paid pass and cabanas cost extra. Management expects around 1.4 million island visits in 2027 and says waterpark take-up and pricing are meeting expectations. It has not disclosed the take-up rate.
