10 Warship Missions Moving to Drones as Naval Group Unveils SCX26

SHIPUNIVERSE / NAVAL TECHNOLOGY · NOVEMBER 2026

The Future Destroyer May Be a Drone Factory With Missiles Attached

A destroyer used to earn its keep by what it carried and how far its radar could see. That's no longer the whole calculation. Naval Group's SCX26 asks what happens when a warship can send its eyes, ears and some of its weapons miles away, then bring the machines back, repair them and perhaps make replacement parts before the next watch.

170 mProposed length
~8,000 tDesign displacement
96VLS positions in described layout; variants could carry more missiles
100 kWProposed laser power

Concept, not a contract. SCX26 was unveiled November 3, 2026. No ship has been ordered. Onboard drone manufacturing is a proposed capability, not an operational factory aboard SCX26.

01 / Evidence from the fleet

Three numbers worth watching

12Drones built at seaFirestorm reported assembling 12 Squall drones and printing more than 1,000 parts aboard USS Essex in 2026.
300Systems at REPMUS 2026NATO's maritime exercise included 300 uncrewed systems and representatives of 36 navies.
200+Small USVs contractedU.S. Defense Innovation Unit announced a production contract for over 200 unmanned surface craft.
The architectural change: the destroyer remains the command, sensing and weapons hub. Unmanned vehicles extend its reach, reduce crew exposure and add replaceable capacity. But every drone creates new requirements for communications, recovery, charging, storage and maintenance.
02 / Ten jobs moving offboard

The new distribution of naval work

Expand each function for the operational case, current evidence and the constraint. These are broader naval applications, not ten approved capabilities for SCX26.

01Over-the-horizon surveillance
See farther without bringing the ship closer.
AIR / SURFACEDetails
What movesUAVs and USVs carry cameras, infrared sensors and maritime surveillance payloads beyond the destroyer's line of sight.
EvidenceNATO Task Force X has employed unmanned maritime surveillance. Sea Hunter and Seahawk have served as U.S. Navy distributed sensor prototypes.
ConstraintLong endurance, reliable recovery and resilient links matter as much as sensor quality. Persistent coverage is not automatic.
02Remote target identification
Move sensors toward contacts before committing weapons.
AIR / SURFACEDetails
What movesEO/IR cameras, maritime radar and identification sensors can inspect a distant contact while the host ship fuses the data.
EvidenceNAVAIR lists ViDAR and maritime radar payloads for uncrewed aircraft. Remote tracking is established; weapons-quality integration is a separate challenge.
ConstraintLatency, geolocation accuracy, identification confidence and human engagement authority must be resolved.
03Submarine search
Spread acoustic listening away from the mothership.
USV / UUVDetails
What movesUnmanned surface and underwater systems can carry acoustic sensors, extend search patterns and investigate underwater contacts.
EvidenceSea Hunter and Seahawk support anti-submarine experimentation. The Royal Navy led ASW trials at REPMUS 2026.
ConstraintUnderwater communications, acoustic interpretation, power endurance and contact verification remain difficult.
04Mine detection and clearance
Send an unmanned hull into the danger area first.
USV / UUVDetails
What movesAutonomous craft tow minehunting sonar, sweep channels and help prepare safe routes.
EvidenceU.S. Navy mine-countermeasures USVs deployed aboard USS Canberra and USS Santa Barbara in March 2025.
ConstraintDetection is not clearance. Neutralization and route verification require further systems and procedures.
05Electronic surveillance and jamming
Push antennas and selected emissions off the ship.
AIR / SURFACEDetails
What movesRemote aircraft or craft can gather RF signals, locate emitters and potentially carry localized electronic-warfare equipment.
EvidenceNAVAIR documents unmanned SIGINT payloads. The Office of Naval Research has sought ship-based airborne EW systems.
ConstraintAntenna size, electrical power, interference and spectrum coordination limit small-platform capability.
06Missile and radar decoys
Create alternative signatures away from the hull.
AIR / SURFACEDetails
What movesExpendable or recoverable drones may simulate signatures or carry electronic payloads intended to confuse hostile sensors.
EvidenceONR's 2025 research solicitation sought affordable ship-based airborne EW decoys to supplement warship self-protection.
ConstraintDecoy timing and signature quality are critical; an adversary may discriminate a decoy from the actual ship.
07Counter-drone interception
Push defensive interceptors farther from the ship.
AIR / SURFACEDetails
What movesSmall airborne interceptors or defensive USVs could engage selected approaching unmanned threats.
EvidenceNATO's 2026 counter-UAS frameworks include interceptor options. U.S. programs are developing small surface interceptors.
ConstraintEarly detection, target discrimination, safe coordination and affordable cost per engagement are essential. SCX26 integration is unproven.
08Distributed short-range strike
Let unmanned platforms carry selected offensive payloads.
AIR / SURFACEDetails
What movesAttritable UAVs and unmanned surface craft can carry smaller offensive payloads while the destroyer retains its high-end missile arsenal.
EvidenceUncrewed attack craft have been used in the Black Sea. USS Santa Barbara launched a low-cost attack drone in December 2025.
ConstraintPayload size, targeting certainty, communications, rules of engagement and human command remain critical. These drones do not replace VLS missiles.
09Communications relay
Keep dispersed ships and drones connected.
AIRDetails
What movesAirborne platforms relay voice, sensor feeds and command data beyond direct radio line of sight.
EvidenceNAVAIR identifies communications-relay UAV payloads; NATO's REPMUS 2026 evaluated connectivity between autonomous systems.
ConstraintJamming, cyber resilience, limited bandwidth and dependence on individual relay nodes complicate fleet networking.
10Spare-parts and cargo delivery
Stop using a helicopter for every urgent spare part.
AIR / SURFACEDetails
What movesSmall aircraft move parts between ships; unmanned boats can deliver manufactured components and other supplies.
EvidenceThe Royal Navy made a ship-to-ship drone delivery in 2025. At RIMPAC 2026, U.S. forces demonstrated onboard manufacturing followed by unmanned surface-vessel resupply.
ConstraintPayload weight, weather, safe deck operations and certification of printed replacement parts determine practical use.

The examples above are different stages of maturity across different fleets. None establishes that Naval Group has integrated all ten systems aboard SCX26.

03 / The engineering reality

Four things the destroyer still has to do

RequirementEngineering challengeQuestion for buyers
Launch and recoveryLift capacity, deck motion, charging, storage and safe turnaround. How many sorties are sustainable in real seas?
Combat-system integrationSensor fusion, resilient communications and electronic-warfare coordination. What keeps working when disconnected?
Onboard manufacturingMaterials, inspection, safety certification and spare electronic components.Which parts can actually be made and approved?
Crew and powerOperators, maintainers, mission computers, cooling and power share ship capacity. How is workload managed over a long deployment?
Research sources and documentation
04 / INTERACTIVE MISSION SELECTOR

Give the Destroyer a Mission

See which functions a drone-supported task group might assign offboard. Select a scenario to change the mission package.

Illustrative combinations, not a confirmed SCX26 loadout or deployment forecast.
