Panama Canal Loosens Booking Rules as $5.3M Auction Bid Exposes Slot Squeeze

The Panama Canal has temporarily rewritten key parts of its Neopanamax reservation system as reduced water availability tightens transit capacity and competition for guaranteed passages intensifies. Effective August 30 for transit booking dates beginning September 13, shipping companies can secure multiple Neopanamax slots for the same date and reservations on consecutive dates, reversing restrictions introduced earlier this month. The Canal will make 63 Neopanamax reservation slots available each week, including LoTSA and NetZero allocations, while establishing minimum capacity for containerships, LPG, LNG and other vessel segments. The change comes as Neopanamax transit capacity is being reduced to nine vessels per day from September 3, and after a recent auction reportedly reached a record $5.3 million for a single transit slot
Operator Impact Snapshot
Carriers can hold multiple slots on the same date
Neopanamax customers may again secure more than one reservation for a single booking date and can obtain slots on two or more consecutive booking dates.
Five container slots are protected each booking date
Full containerships receive a minimum five Neopanamax slots per date, with allocation linked to Transit TEU Allowance capacity rather than customer ranking alone.
LPG receives 21 weekly slots while LNG receives three
The new structure reserves a minimum of three LPG slots per booking date and three LNG slots per week, while unused capacity can move between market segments.
Auctions remain outside normal customer slot limits
The daily auction mechanism continues. An auction-awarded slot does not count against the maximum number of reservation slots otherwise permitted for an individual customer.
A reservation is now increasingly valuable as capacity falls
The Canal says a confirmed reservation is the only way to guarantee a specific transit date. Ships arriving without one may face prolonged or potentially indefinite delays.
The 63 Weekly Slots Are No Longer One Common Pool
The new framework places minimum capacity around individual market segments while still allowing unused slots to move elsewhere when demand is insufficient.
