Hormuz Transit Collapse Turns Gulf Shipping Risk Into a Live Market Signal

🔔 Subscribe to ShipUniverse Weekly →

The Strait of Hormuz crisis moved into a sharper phase over the last 24 hours as vessel counts, sanctions pressure and live security incidents all worsened at the same time. Only two tankers were tracked through Hormuz on Monday, a three-month low and far below the pre-war energy flow that made the strait the world’s most important oil chokepoint. The commercial risk became more immediate when an oil tanker was struck near Oman at the entrance to Hormuz, damaging its engine room and disabling the vessel. At the same time, Iran vowed retaliation after the U.S. widened sanctions and warned economic partners away from Tehran, while Iran’s own blacklist of tankers and threats around ship-to-ship transfers added another compliance layer.

Ship Universe Hormuz Watch

Operator Impact Snapshot

Hormuz traffic, tanker security and sanctions risk all deteriorated in the same 24-hour window.

Severe

Transit count collapse

Only two tankers were tracked through Hormuz on Monday, the lowest commodity-vessel tally since early May.

Severe

Tanker disabled near Oman

An oil tanker was hit near Ash Shishah, Oman, damaging the engine room and leaving the vessel disabled close to the Hormuz entrance.

High

Oil flow far below normal

Vortexa put Monday oil transits near 5 million bpd, far below the roughly 20 million bpd oil flow seen through Hormuz in 2024.

High

Sanctions risk widens

The U.S. widened Iran-linked sanctions exposure across shipping and other sectors, while Iran vowed retaliation.

Watch

Blacklisted tanker pressure

Iran’s 45-tanker blacklist and threats around ship-to-ship transfers add another layer for chartering, compliance and insurance screening.

Medium

Red Sea pressure overlaps

A separate tanker strike west of Yanbu shows the regional risk is not limited to Hormuz alone.

Operator signal: the critical metric is no longer a simple open-versus-closed label. The market is now pricing usable capacity, crew exposure, AIS uncertainty, insurance language, sanctions screening and the cost of moving cargo through a corridor that may be open only in a limited commercial sense.

Hormuz Situation Board

Traffic, Attacks, Sanctions and Energy Flow

The latest data shows a chokepoint operating far below normal commercial capacity.

Monday Hormuz tanker transits 2

Lowest daily commodity-vessel tally since early May, according to reported ship-tracking data.

Monday oil transit estimate 5M bpd

Vortexa’s provisional figure for oil moving through Hormuz on Monday.

Seven-day oil transit average 6M to 7M bpd

Reported by August 23, still far below normal pre-war flow.

Pre-war oil flow reference 20M bpd

Approximate 2024 average oil flow through Hormuz, equal to about one-fifth of global petroleum liquids consumption.

Issue Latest Detail Commercial Signal Buyer or Operator Effect Pressure Meter
Hormuz Transit CountCommodity-vessel flow Only two tankers were tracked through the strait Monday, both entering the Gulf. The visible flow is far below normal and too thin for Gulf exports to look commercially stable. Owners, charterers and refiners face reduced fixture confidence and higher voyage-risk checks. Severe
Oil Transit VolumeEnergy supply signal Vortexa put Monday oil transits near 5 million bpd, with a seven-day average near 6 million to 7 million bpd. The market has flow, but not enough to resemble normal Gulf export capacity. Energy buyers need to price alternative crude, refinery slate changes, inventory draw and freight premiums. High
Ash Shishah Tanker StrikeEntrance to Hormuz A tanker was struck by an unknown projectile about 9 nautical miles northeast of Ash Shishah, Oman, damaging the engine room and disabling the ship. The incident turns route risk into a direct hull, machinery, salvage and crew-safety concern. Insurers and charterers may tighten security clauses, routing approvals, escalation triggers and notice requirements. Severe
U.S. Sanctions ExpansionShipping sector included Washington sanctioned nearly 60 Iran-linked targets and widened secondary-sanctions exposure across sectors including shipping. Shipping, bunkering, finance, insurance, ports, commodity trading and vessel management all face higher screening burdens. Counterparty checks, ownership history, STS links, AIS gaps and sanctions warranties become more central to fixtures. High
Iran Retaliation ThreatGeopolitical response Iran vowed retaliation after the expanded U.S. sanctions campaign. The risk is not only more sanctions, but a feedback loop between economic pressure and maritime pressure. Gulf exporters, LNG buyers and tanker operators need plans for sudden rule changes, detentions or route interruption. High
45-Tanker BlacklistIran transit enforcement Iran warned that vessels dealing with blacklisted tankers, including through ship-to-ship transfers, could face action. The blacklist increases legal and operational uncertainty around STS cargo chains and vessel history. Cargo buyers may require deeper vessel-history review before accepting Gulf-linked barrels. High
Bab el-Mandeb ComparisonRegional chokepoint context Kpler counted 29 vessels through Bab el-Mandeb Monday, broadly in line with its 10-day average. The Red Sea chokepoint is not showing the same transit collapse as Hormuz in the latest count. The region still carries stacked risks, especially after the separate tanker strike west of Yanbu. Medium High
Yanbu Red Sea StrikeSaudi export-route risk A tanker was struck about 63 nautical miles west of Yanbu, with reports identifying a Saudi VLCC as the affected vessel. The northern Red Sea is becoming part of the same energy-shipping risk conversation. Bypass routes only help if alternative corridors remain safe, insurable and commercially predictable. High

Hormuz Transit Risk and Cost Tool

Estimate the voyage impact of low transit counts, war-risk premiums, security costs, delay exposure and sanctions screening.

Higher scores reflect stronger exposure to Hormuz energy-route risk.
Use cargo value exposed during the Hormuz leg.
Use insured vessel value or an internal planning estimate.
Use quoted additional premium or scenario assumption.
Include security provider, intelligence, routing support, communications and extra procedures.
Use convoy wait, port delay, route hold, inspection delay, casualty recovery or cargo timing risk.
Use hire, fuel, opex, inventory, financing, customer penalty or refinery impact.
Default uses the latest reported two-tanker day.
Higher values reflect tougher screening for Iran exposure, STS links, ownership history and blacklisted vessels.

War-Risk Premium

$1.4M

Modeled additional war-risk premium using the selected vessel value.

Delay Exposure

$510,000

Estimated waiting, rerouting, inspection or schedule-recovery cost.

Total Added Voyage Cost

$2.1M

War-risk premium plus security, routing and modeled delay exposure.

Risk-Adjusted Exposure

$23.5M

Planning exposure based on asset value, cargo value, route pressure and sanctions complexity.

Severe Review

The model shows severe exposure. Transit scarcity, live attack risk, insurance cost and sanctions complexity justify senior-level approval before fixture or voyage commitment.

Use note: This calculator is a planning model, not legal, insurance, sanctions, military, navigation or chartering advice. Actual exposure depends on live threat reporting, flag guidance, insurer wording, naval coordination, cargo type, vessel identity, AIS behavior, ownership history, STS exposure, contract terms, crew readiness, port instructions and government advisories.
