Ferry Disasters, Ship Fires and Rotterdam Blast Put Maritime Safety Back in Focus
Maritime safety incidents have accumulated rapidly during the opening six weeks of the third quarter, ranging from passenger-ferry disasters and vessel fires to terminal explosions, storm losses and attacks on civilian shipping. The newest major incident came on August 13 at Rotterdam, where an explosion during maintenance work at Gunvor's petroleum storage facility killed one person and injured six. Earlier in the quarter, Guyana suffered a catastrophic ferry sinking that left 73 people confirmed dead and another 30 missing, Indonesia experienced two serious passenger-ferry fires within ten days, a Vietnamese cargo ship sank during severe weather in the South China Sea, and merchant vessels suffered fatal attacks in the Black Sea, Red Sea and waters around Oman. Several investigations remain open, including questions involving passenger manifests, fire origins, maintenance activity and the circumstances surrounding individual vessel attacks.
