Canada Awards C$11.3B Contract for Six New Coast Guard Icebreakers as Arctic Fleet Buildout Accelerates

Canada has committed C$11.3 billion before tax to design and build six new Canadian Coast Guard Program Icebreakers at Chantier Davie in Lévis, Québec, in the largest shipbuilding contract ever awarded in the province. The fixed-price contract was announced August 24, with construction of the first vessel scheduled to begin in 2027, first delivery targeted for 2032 and the complete six-ship fleet expected in service by 2038. The ships will replace aging heavy and medium icebreakers working the St. Lawrence, Great Lakes and Atlantic during winter and deploying into the Arctic during summer. They will be Polar Class 3 vessels, capable of maintaining 3 knots through 1.4 metres of ice, with a planned 20,000-nautical-mile range, helicopter capability and accommodation for as many as 68 crew and mission personnel. Ottawa estimates the construction phase will support nearly 5,000 jobs and contribute almost C$650 million annually to Canadian GDP.
