Delivery Timeline Expected between 2027 and 2028.
Significance The VLACs are among the largest ammonia-capable vessels in the world, highlighting the growing importance of alternative fuels in shipping.
Strategic Impact This investment helps advance the decarbonization goals of AW Shipping and supports global ammonia transport infrastructure.

AW Shipping, a joint venture between ADNOC Logistics & Services (ADNOC L&S) and Wanhua Chemical Group, has made a significant move in the decarbonization of shipping by placing a $250 million order for two Very Large Ammonia Carriers (VLACs). These vessels, to be built by China's Jiangnan Shipyard, are among the largest ammonia-capable ships in the world. Delivery of these VLACs is expected between 2027 and 2028, showcasing the industry's increasing commitment to alternative fuels and greener maritime solutions.

Ammonia as a Green Fuel Alternative

The order for ammonia-fueled vessels underscores the growing role of alternative fuels in the shipping industry as it faces rising regulatory and environmental pressures. Ammonia is seen as a promising fuel because it does not emit carbon dioxide (CO2) when used, making it a viable alternative to traditional fossil fuels like heavy fuel oil (HFO). The adoption of ammonia as a marine fuel is part of the broader decarbonization strategy that aims to align with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) targets of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the shipping sector by at least 50% by 2050.

In addition to being carbon-free, ammonia is relatively easy to store and transport. However, there are still challenges to be addressed, such as handling its toxicity and developing the global infrastructure for ammonia bunkering. Despite these challenges, shipping companies like AW Shipping are investing in ammonia-capable vessels to future-proof their operations and remain competitive in a rapidly changing regulatory environment.

Partnership Between ADNOC L&S and Wanhua Chemical Group

AW Shipping’s decision to invest in VLACs reflects the broader goals of both ADNOC L&S and Wanhua Chemical Group to drive innovation and environmental responsibility in their respective industries. As a key player in the oil and gas industry, ADNOC is pushing for cleaner alternatives that will allow it to meet future demand for energy while also reducing emissions. Wanhua Chemical, on the other hand, is leveraging this investment to secure sustainable transportation options for its ammonia production and distribution.

The VLACs ordered from Jiangnan Shipyard are designed to carry large volumes of ammonia over long distances, which is essential for the global chemical supply chain. The dual-purpose vessels are expected to operate on ammonia fuel and conventional marine fuels during the transition phase, making them versatile and adaptable to future advancements in fuel technology.

Strategic Implications for the Maritime Industry

AW Shipping's investment signals a larger trend in the maritime sector toward cleaner and more efficient vessels. The order comes at a time when shipowners and operators are under increasing pressure to reduce their environmental impact, both from regulatory bodies and customers who prioritize sustainability. These new VLACs will not only serve the growing global demand for ammonia as a marine fuel but also help establish the necessary infrastructure for wider adoption of ammonia-fueled ships.

China’s Jiangnan Shipyard, which is building the vessels, has a long-standing reputation for delivering cutting-edge ships, and this contract further cements its role as a leader in the construction of future-ready maritime solutions. The shipyard’s ability to build some of the largest ammonia carriers in the world highlights the growing importance of green shipping technologies.

Looking Ahead

With delivery of the VLACs expected between 2027 and 2028, AW Shipping is positioning itself to capitalize on the transition toward cleaner fuels in the maritime industry. As more shipping companies invest in green technologies and alternative fuels like ammonia, the shipping sector is poised to make significant strides in reducing its carbon footprint. This move by AW Shipping is an important step in the journey toward decarbonization, and it will likely inspire other industry players to follow suit in investing in sustainable solutions.
