PanStar Acro Reaches Britain in 21 Days via Northern Sea Route

South Korea’s PanStar Acro reached Felixstowe, Britain, on September 12 after a 21-day voyage from Busan through the Northern Sea Route, completing the outbound Arctic crossing of South Korea’s first government-backed container trial to Europe. The 2,758-TEU vessel left Busan on August 22, entered Arctic waters on August 31 and cleared the western end of the route on September 9 before reaching Felixstowe and Rotterdam one day later, on September 13. The roughly 13,000-kilometer Busan-Rotterdam routing is about 35% shorter than the approximately 20,000-kilometer Suez route, and PanStar had targeted roughly 10 days of transit-time savings and about 30% lower fuel costs. The ship completed the outbound Arctic section without Russian icebreaker assistance despite drifting ice, winds reportedly reaching 40 knots and evasive maneuvering near the Vilkitsky Strait. PanStar Acro is continuing to Gdansk before beginning the return voyage through the Arctic, with South Korea using the round trip to collect operating, fuel, cost, safety and schedule data ahead of its goal of developing a regular Korea-Europe Arctic service around 2030.
21 Days from Busan to Britain
PanStar Acro has completed the outbound Northern Sea Route crossing and reached northern Europe. The voyage now moves into its second test: returning through the Arctic as seasonal ice begins to rebuild.
The voyage began in Busan on August 22 and reached Britain on September 12.
South Korea's maritime ministry estimates the route is roughly 7,000 km shorter than routing via Suez.
The conventional Busan-Rotterdam routing via the Suez Canal is estimated at approximately 20,000 km.
A relatively small container ship compared with the ultra-large vessels deployed on mainstream Asia-Europe services.
The vessel crossed during the seasonal low-ice window without Russian icebreaker escort.
What the First Crossing Actually Demonstrated
The outbound voyage proved that the route can work during the late-summer navigation window. It has not yet demonstrated year-round reliability, round-trip economics or liner-scale capacity.
