Piracy Update: Global Attack Numbers Tell a Split Story

🔔 Subscribe to ShipUniverse Weekly →

Maritime piracy is sending a sharply divided signal in 2026. Global incident totals have fallen to their lowest first-half level since 1992, but the most serious crew-risk cases are now clustering again around Somalia, the Gulf of Aden and nearby waters. Piracy-related incidents off Somalia have reached a 10-year high, with 13 already recorded in the first seven months of the year, after only eight in 2024 and five in 2025. Four vessels were reported hijacked between April and May, additional approaches followed in June, and the latest August report added another cargo vessel hijacking close to the Somali coast near Mareeyo. EUNAVFOR’s latest piracy update lists HONOUR 25, SWARD, EUREKA and ASANA among the ongoing Somali cases, with 67 crewmembers in captivity. At the same time, Asia’s armed-robbery figures have improved from last year and Gulf of Guinea reports remain low, creating a piracy market that looks quieter on the global dashboard but more dangerous in the Horn of Africa operating area.

Ship Universe Piracy Watch

Operator Impact Snapshot

Global incident totals are down, but Somali crew-risk severity is back in the center of the piracy map.

Severe

Somali captivity risk

The headline concern is not only the number of incidents. It is the concentration of hostage cases around Somali-linked pirate activity.

High

Ten-year activity high

Somalia-related incidents have already passed recent full-year totals, making 2026 the strongest piracy rebound since the old crisis period.

High

Hijacking capability restored

Recent attacks show that pirate groups can still seize vulnerable tankers, general cargo vessels and smaller ships close to shore or near regional lanes.

Watch

Asia improves, hotspots remain

Asia’s first-half incident count is sharply lower, but the Singapore Strait, Philippine ports and some anchorages remain recurring theft zones.

Low

Gulf of Guinea quieter

Only two first-half incidents were reported in the Gulf of Guinea, a major contrast with the crew-kidnap pressure seen in earlier years.

Market signal: the useful reading is split-screen. The global count is low, but the Horn of Africa threat is becoming more operationally serious because hijacking, hostage-taking, armed approaches and mothership-style behavior are back in the file.

Piracy Data Board

Low Global Count, High Somali Severity

The 2026 piracy picture is being shaped by fewer total incidents but more serious Horn of Africa hostage cases.

Somalia-related incidents, first seven months 13

Highest reported Somalia-related activity level in 10 years.

Global first-half incidents 38

Lowest January-to-June global total since 1992.

Crew taken hostage in first half 67

Somali pirates accounted for the overwhelming majority of those hostage cases.

Asia first-half incidents 35

Down sharply from 96 incidents in the first half of 2025.

Risk Zone Latest Signal Operating Pattern Commercial Effect Threat Meter
Somalia and Gulf of AdenResurgent hijacking zone Thirteen incidents in seven months, four ongoing piracy cases, and another August hijacking report near Mareeyo. Armed groups are targeting vulnerable vessels and holding seized ships close to the northern Somali coast. Risk-priced routes, security teams, higher watchkeeping, insurance review, crew planning and slower fixture clearance. Severe
Red Sea and Bab el-MandebPiracy plus conflict overlap Regional reporting counts attempted and actual piracy or robbery incidents alongside wider attack threats. The same corridor now carries armed robbery, piracy, drone, missile, detention and war-risk complications. Security cost is no longer a single line item because piracy and conflict risks can stack in one voyage plan. High
Singapore StraitLower count, still active Incidents have fallen sharply from last year, but the waterway still accounts for most Asian reports. Most cases remain opportunistic theft rather than Somalia-style hijacking. Masters still face boarding, store theft, engine-room intrusion, crew intimidation and reporting burden. Medium High
Philippine Ports and AnchoragesNew first-half rise Ten first-half incidents were reported after no cases in the same period last year. The pattern is more port and anchorage oriented than open-ocean hijacking. Anchorage security, deck patrols, lighting, access control and local reporting remain the main cost drivers. Watch
Gulf of GuineaImproved first half Only two first-half incidents were reported. Regional patrols and cooperation appear to be holding down the incident count. Lower activity helps, but kidnap-for-ransom history keeps underwriters and crew managers cautious. Medium
Vulnerable VesselsLow freeboard and slow speed Recent Somali cases have included tankers, general cargo ships, dhow-type vessels and ships near anchorages or coastal routes. Low freeboard, slow speed, poor hardening and limited security support raise the boarding probability. Security spend becomes more justifiable for older, slower, smaller or lower-freeboard vessels in the risk zone. High

Piracy Exposure and Security Cost Calculator

Estimate voyage piracy exposure by combining route, vessel vulnerability, security measures, delay risk and insured value.

Choose the closest operating area for the next voyage leg.
Lower freeboard increases boarding vulnerability.
Lower speeds increase approach and boarding exposure.
Use the closest onboard protection level.
Higher score reflects razor wire, locked access, lighting, water spray, CCTV, citadel and drills.
Higher score reflects bridge watch, radar use, AIS discipline, UKMTO or MSCIO reporting, and crew drills.
Used for insured exposure and additional premium modeling.
Use estimated cargo value exposed during the piracy-risk leg.
Include security team, risk advisory, routing, war-risk premium, communications and port delay preparation.
Use waiting, rerouting, naval coordination, port delay or post-incident recovery time.
Use hire, opex, fuel, cargo delay, customer penalty or lost schedule value.

Vulnerability Score

54%

Modeled exposure from vessel characteristics and onboard protection.

Security Cost

$185,000

Selected security and insurance cost for the voyage leg.

Delay Exposure

$126,000

Modeled extra delay cost from waiting, rerouting or incident response.

Risk-Adjusted Exposure

Voyage Security Signal

Heightened Transit

The model shows elevated exposure. Route risk, vessel profile, insurance cost and delay assumptions justify senior-level voyage review.

Use note: This calculator is a planning model, not legal, navigation, insurance, military, chartering or security advice. Actual exposure depends on live threat reporting, naval presence, flag instructions, vessel type, crew readiness, cargo type, freeboard, speed, route, insurer wording, security-provider rules and local coastal-state response.
