Four merchant ships were targeted in the western Black Sea during the October 14-15 overnight period, including vessels inside the territorial waters of NATO member Romania. The San Marino-flagged chemical tanker Wine Trader was struck about 13 nautical miles southeast of the Sulina Canal, roughly one nautical mile outside Romanian territorial waters; five of its 12 crewmembers were rescued and seven remained missing Thursday evening. The Comoros-flagged chemical/oil tanker Yara J was hit 8-10 nautical miles southeast of Sulina inside Romanian territorial waters, with its crew extinguishing the resulting fire without casualties. NATO separately said the Marshall Islands-flagged bulk carrier Sea Destiny was targeted inside Romanian waters and the Tanzania-flagged tanker Dania J was targeted while moored at Ukraine's Izmail port. Romanian President NicuΘor Dan confirmed that drones struck Wine Trader and Yara J but initially stopped short of attributing them; a NATO military source told Reuters the drones were of Russian origin.
Four Merchant Ships Targeted Across One Overnight Attack Window
The latest sequence moves the commercial-shipping threat across the legal boundary that previously separated attacks in offshore economic zones from vessels operating inside Romanian territorial waters.

The critical change is not simply that more ships were hit. The attack pattern now spans a Romanian territorial-water anchorage, waters immediately outside Romania, and Ukraine's Danube ports during the same overnight operating window.
| Vessel / System | Status | Location | Crew / Physical Outcome | Evidence & Attribution | Operational Significance |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| WINE TRADER | 7 MISSING Drone Strike | Approximately 13 NM southeast of Sulina, about one nautical mile outside Romania's territorial sea. | Twelve aboard. Five rescued. One rescued sailor remained hospitalized with superficial burns. Vessel had no cargo according to Romania's Naval Authority. | President NicuΘor Dan said the tanker was hit by drones. A NATO military source told Reuters the drones striking the tankers were Russian. | The casualty sits directly beside the Sulina gateway used by Danube-bound and Danube-origin shipping, while search activity is complicated by heavy sea conditions. |
| YARA J | CREW SAFE Fire Extinguished | Approximately 8-10 NM southeast of Sulina, inside Romanian territorial waters. | Fire was extinguished by the crew and no casualties were reported. | Romania initially investigated the cause. Dan later said drones struck both tankers. The NATO military source attributed the drones to Russia. | This is the clearest shift across the territorial boundary: a commercial tanker was hit inside waters under Romanian sovereignty. |
| SEA DESTINY | TARGETED Bulk Carrier | NATO says the Marshall Islands-flagged vessel was targeted inside Romanian waters. | NATO's initial statement cited by Reuters did not report casualties. | NATO publicly listed the ship among two additional vessels targeted overnight. | Extends the incident set beyond tankers and suggests commercial ship type alone does not define the exposure. |
| DANIA J | TARGETED Tanker | Moored in the Ukrainian Danube port of Izmail. | NATO's initial account did not report casualties. | NATO identified the Tanzania-flagged tanker as another overnight target. | Connects the offshore Sulina attacks directly with the Ukrainian Danube-port system the anchorage serves. |
| Romanian Air Defence | ACTIVE RESPONSE F-18 + F-16 Scrambles | Drone activity detected around Snake Island, Sulina and Romanian territorial airspace. | Spanish F-18s operating NATO Enhanced Air Policing and Romanian F-16s were launched during the overnight alert. | Romania's Defence Ministry independently documented a drone entering national airspace at 01:34 for approximately one minute. | Commercial maritime protection and NATO air-policing missions are increasingly intersecting in the same narrow coastal zone. |
| Sulina / Danube Shipping Route | STRATEGIC TRADE ROUTE Ukraine Export Gateway | Mouth of the Sulina Canal connecting the Black Sea with the Danube system. | No closure of the canal was announced in the initial reporting. | Reuters identifies Sulina as a major route used by Ukraine as repeated attacks constrain its Black Sea ports. | Repeated attacks around ships waiting for canal access can create security, insurance, crew and congestion problems even without physically damaging the canal itself. |
