CMB.TECH’s 210,000-dwt Mineral Europa has moved beyond sea trials into commercial operation, marking the first deployment of an ammonia dual-fuel system on a Newcastlemax-scale dry bulk carrier. The vessel was delivered by CSSC Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding on October 9 and has begun its maiden voyage toward Australia, where it is expected to enter Fortescue’s Pilbara iron-ore trade. On October 13, the 300-meter vessel stopped off Zhoushan and received 1,000 tonnes of green ammonia by ship-to-ship transfer before departing for Australia. CMB.TECH describes Mineral Europa as the world’s first ammonia-powered dry bulk vessel, while builder CSSC describes it as the first 210,000-dwt ammonia dual-fuel Newcastlemax. Fortescue has agreed to charter up to 12 210,000-dwt CMB.TECH vessels, with as many as three delivered with ammonia dual-fuel engines and the other nine designed for later conversion.
Ammonia Moves Into Newcastlemax Scale
The Propulsion Chain
Green ammonia produced at China Energy Engineering's Songyuan project and delivered to the vessel at Zhoushan.
Ammonia supply is not yet globally available. Mineral Europa can revert to conventional fuel while the bunkering network develops.
The Scale Test Starts Immediately
Mineral Europa matters because several follow-on ships, a charter customer and a fuel-supply chain already exist behind the prototype.

CMB.TECH Ammonia Fleet
Factory testing, installation and sea trials have now progressed into commercial operation.
Zhoushan demonstrated production, inland logistics, storage and dedicated ship-to-ship delivery.
Fuel cost, port availability, maintenance, crew workload and long-run emissions performance now become commercial questions.
Mineral Europa incorporates double-wall piping, ventilation, gas detection, containment, emergency shutdown and vapour-management systems. Crew preparation includes digital-twin training, fuel-system simulation, bunkering familiarisation and emergency-response scenarios.
What Does a 1,000-Tonne Ammonia Bunker Replace?
Convert ammonia mass into HFO-equivalent energy and estimate the combustion CO₂ avoided versus conventional fuel.
