The cost of moving Russian Urals crude from the Black Sea to India has surged to $27 million to $30 million for a single one-way Suezmax voyage, up from about $19 million in September, according to traders cited by Reuters. A typical cargo is about 140,000 metric tons, and Reuters calculates that freight to Asia is now costing Russia around $30 per barrel or more. The Baltic route has also hit records, with roughly 100,000-ton Aframax cargoes to western India costing $21 million to $23 million, versus $13 million to $16 million a month earlier. The escalation reflects a combination of unusually tight global tanker supply, Black Sea security risk, sanctions-related vessel segmentation, insurance pressure and increasingly difficult voyage execution.

A Million-Barrel Cargo Can Now Carry a $30 Million Shipping Bill
The Black Sea-to-India route illustrates how freight has become a major part
of the economics of Russian crude. The oil still moves, but increasingly expensive
transportation absorbs more of the value before the cargo reaches the refinery.

It is also a one-way voyage quote. It should not be interpreted as shipowner

WS1002.5
Riverlake's October assessment for a 140,000-ton crude cargo.
Reuters says this is almost twice the previous all-time high.
What Does Worldscale 1002.5 Actually Mean?
Worldscale is a tanker freight quoting system built around a published
route-specific "flat rate." WS100 represents 100% of that published rate.
WS250 represents 250%. WS1002.5 therefore represents 1002.5% of the
relevant Worldscale flat rate before applicable contractual adjustments.
It is not the same thing as $1,002.50 per tonne or $1 million per day.
The final dollar freight depends on the route's flat rate, cargo quantity,
additions and differentials.

The Economic Pressure Is Moving in Both Directions
RussiaHigher Export Friction
Expensive freight absorbs part of the revenue benefit Russia receives from elevated crude prices.
Indian RefinersHigher Landed Cost
The crude may still be commercially attractive, but the freight component now requires a much larger discount or refining margin to offset it.
Tanker OwnersExtreme Returns
Owners willing and able to execute Russia-linked voyages are demanding exceptional compensation for tonnage, risk and complexity.
Route comparison caution:
the WS1002.5 assessment is for Black Sea-to-Mediterranean crude,
while the $27M-$30M figure is the longer Black Sea-to-India voyage.
They demonstrate the same freight-market stress but should not be treated
as two quotations for the same route.
