Black Sea Drone Attack Sinks Merchant Ship in Bulgaria’s EEZ; Search for 10 Crew Called Off

Bulgaria has ended the search for the 10 crewmembers of the Togo-flagged general cargo ship Alfa Watan, which sank after a combined aerial- and maritime-drone attack inside Bulgaria’s Black Sea exclusive economic zone on October 6. The search-and-rescue operation was terminated at 17:00 local time after authorities found no sailors or bodies; responders recovered an overturned boat, three life rafts and floating ship equipment. Alfa Watan sank about 70 nautical miles east of Byala after what Bulgarian officials described as an extremely rapid loss, while the second vessel struck in the same attack, the Palau-flagged Able, remains abandoned with its engine room flooded and is now considered likely to sink. Bulgaria has not publicly established who launched the drones.

The Search Is Over. Ten Sailors Remain Missing.

Bulgaria has ended the search-and-rescue phase for ALFA WATAN after finding no survivors or bodies from the 10-person crew. Evidence recovered from the surface shows that evacuation equipment deployed, but nobody was located.

Lifeboat 1 Found
Authorities recovered an overturned boat from the casualty area.
Life Rafts 3 Found
Three life rafts were located, but no sailors were found with them.
Drone Debris None Found
Bulgarian rescue officials say no confirmed drone remains have been recovered.
Pollution Minimal
Maritime Administration reported only limited pollution near the casualty area.
3 Minutes
Bulgaria's military says the crew had almost no warning window.

Chief of Defence Admiral Emil Eftimov said ALFA WATAN's crew had about three minutes to react after the combined aerial and maritime-drone attack began. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre received the vessel's emergency-beacon signal at 02:54.

ALFA WATAN SUNK 10 Crew Missing Bulgaria formally ended the search after no sailors or bodies were located. General cargo vessel sank rapidly following a combined drone attack approximately 70 NM east of Byala. Demonstrates that a merchant ship can now suffer catastrophic combat damage while simply transiting inside Bulgaria's EEZ. No bodies, survivors or confirmed drone debris have been recovered.
ABLE CRITICAL Likely to Sink Bulgaria's Maritime Administration says the engine room is flooded and the vessel has developed significant stern trim. Crew abandoned after fire and damage from the reported sea-drone impact. All 18 were rescued. A second total loss from the same attack would materially increase the casualty and wreck-management burden. Final salvage feasibility and whether the ship remains afloat long enough for intervention.
Search & Rescue TERMINATED 17:00 · Oct. 6 An overturned boat, three life rafts and floating ship equipment were recovered. Rescue officials concluded there was no remaining evidence pointing to survivors. The operation demonstrates the difficulty of responding to a rapid casualty 70 NM offshore after a kinetic attack. Exact sequence aboard ALFA WATAN between the first strike and sinking.
Attribution CONTESTED No Bulgarian Finding Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said a joint investigation with Bulgaria's navy established Russian responsibility. Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev said publicly that it remained unclear whether the drones originated from Russia or Ukraine. Shipowners and insurers must currently assess the physical threat without a settled public attribution model. Forensic evidence identifying the drones, launch point or command chain.
Environmental Risk LIMITED SO FAR Minimal Pollution Maritime Administration reported minimal pollution near the casualty location. ALFA WATAN is submerged and ABLE's engine room is flooded, creating two potential wreck-related pollution sources. Any further deterioration of ABLE would shift the operation toward pollution containment and wreck response. Final bunker leakage, cargo release and underwater wreck condition.
Bulgarian Security Response EXPANDING 5 More SAM Systems Prime Minister Radev said the government would approve acquisition of five additional surface-to-air missile systems. Bulgaria is also escalating interagency maritime-security and national-security coordination. The event is being treated as more than an isolated marine casualty because commercial ships were attacked inside a NATO member's EEZ. How much persistent air and maritime surveillance Bulgaria will deploy over commercial sea lanes.

Three Thresholds Crossed
Transit Ship Sunk

The attack was not confined to a Ukrainian berth or port approach. ALFA WATAN was struck while crossing Bulgaria's offshore economic zone.

Rescue Window Collapsed

Bulgaria's military says the crew had only about three minutes to react before the casualty developed into a sinking.

Second Wreck Possible

ABLE's flooded engine room means the October 6 attack could ultimately leave two merchant-ship wrecks inside the same offshore area.

Offshore Response Distance 70 NM
A casualty this far from shore requires hours simply to position response assets. The October 6 attack also occurred in Bulgaria's EEZ rather than its 12-nautical-mile territorial sea, extending the operational problem well offshore.

Real wreck-removal, salvage, pollution, towing, survey and security costs depend on water depth, cargo, bunker volume, hull condition, weather, contractual responsibility, insurance and government requirements.
