Two merchant ships were attacked by air and sea drones early Tuesday, October 6, inside Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea, in what Bulgarian officials described as the first direct attack on commercial shipping in the country’s EEZ. The strikes occurred at about 03:00 local time roughly 70 nautical miles east of Byala and Cape St. Athanasius. The Togo-flagged general cargo ship Alfa Watan suffered critical structural damage and sank; as of the latest Bulgarian update, no members of its crew had been found and a search operation remained under way. The Palau-flagged Able, which Reuters reported was carrying grain, caught fire after being hit. All 18 crewmembers were evacuated by the Bulgarian-flagged ferry Dioscuria, with two seriously injured. Bulgarian authorities have not publicly identified the attacker. A maritime-security source told Reuters that its initial assessment pointed toward a probable Russian attack, but that attribution had not been established by Bulgaria and Russia had not immediately commented.

Why October 6 Changes the Operating Picture
Previous Risk Center
Ukrainian Ports
Most direct ship strikes were concentrated around Odesa, Chornomorsk and Danube export infrastructure.
New Geography
NATO EEZs
Recent casualties have now occurred off Romania and inside Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone.
New Exposure
Transit Traffic
Ships no longer need to be alongside a Ukrainian berth to face direct kinetic exposure.
Bulgarian Response
Emergency Meeting
Defense, interior, transport, environment and security agencies were called together after the attack.
Search Status
Crew Missing
No ALFA WATAN crewmembers had been located in the latest Bulgarian reporting.
Attribution
Not Confirmed
Bulgarian authorities had not publicly assigned responsibility at publication.
Commercial Effect
Wider Risk Zone
Routing, war-risk cover and voyage planning now have to account for attacks farther from Ukraine's coastline.

New Planning Problem
27.3 hours
October 6 demonstrates that direct kinetic exposure can extend well beyond a Ukrainian port approach. Owners now have to consider the risk window across a larger section of the western Black Sea transit itself.
